It’s good to know that Wal-Mart, a company that kills local businesses and profits by exploiting its employees, has now been sanctified by the Christian religion, which exploits its superstition-believers with fear-mongering and espousal of hatred toward people they don’t like. What a partnership!
When I read of the blessing of Wal-Mart in the Journal (Blog Jammin’, June 14), I had to look to be sure I wasn’t reading a “News of the Weird” column. But no, this was for real and the preacher did actually say, in so many words, that a corporation that is faithful and puts God first gets blessed by God. I guess that’s not such a stretch in a country whose Supreme Court has declared that corporations are people and their money is speech. Orwell’s vision of “1984” has truly arrived.
I have never shopped at Wal-Mart and I never will, but I’d be really disappointed if I missed the day that Jesus came back to pick up a few pieces of cheap crap at our new Wal-Mart store.

I read in the 14 June Journal that pastor Jeff Beltz of the Hydesville Community Church lead a blessing over the new Wal-Mart at its opening. He structured his blessing in accordance with an employee organization chart, starting at the bottom and working his way to the top. He concluded as follows; “Father, please help the top leaders lead like Christ would lead.”
Now I don’t know just how much significance I would give to a prayer over a new Wal-Mart, but I, and I believe a whole lot of others, would say the pastor’s efforts would be better served if he took this same blessing both to Sacramento and Washington, D.C. because, as best as I can tell, those are places where our leaders are truly lost and definitely in need of some form of divine guidance.

AMEN!!!!!!!!
UNBELIEVABLE! WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG HERE????
It’s the New Gilded Age folks…with painfully little media representing the public-interest and sharing our outrage like they did long ago.
As scarcity looms, and millions continue losing their only modest capital to foreclosure….watch the political charlatans praise Walmart for “jobs”!
As if handing a desperate family a shovel to dig their community’s economic hole deeper, is their only choice.
It’s interesting how so many of the Wal-Mart supporters claim it will create local jobs, and yet don’t seem concerned with the specter of offsetting job losses at local retailers or at other big box stores who lack Wal-Mart’s less-than-savory reputation.
Perhaps the truth is that they’re just glad for their own sakes, since now God’s lowest prices can be had without driving to Crescent City. Perhaps they don’t actually give a damn about jobs or the local economy.
Does anyone know how many full time jobs were created with the new Walmart?
150 FT jobs to start with, but who knows what it’ll go to later >
Why is every one down on a company that is just trying to provide lower prices, has mostly the same goods as Kmart oe Target, when you should really vent your anger towards are State and Countries Government? I just heard we are opening our Borders to 70,000 Middle East Refugees. And your worried about Walmart!
Im so tired of everyone’s whining ,for pete’s sake shut! up about Walmart already. I was approached in Walmart by someone who claimed to HATE Walmart,.. and yet,.. they had a cart full of stuff REALLY ?? people need to get a grip, and stop whining because believe it or not there are a lot of people out there that don’t want to hear the whining.
There certainlyhas been a lot of whining by Walmart defenders who rush to the defense of the biggest corporation in the world.
“I just heard we are opening our Borders to 70,000 Middle East Refugees”
Run, run, run! It’s brown people! 70k strong!
“I just heard we are opening our Borders to 70,000 Middle East Refugees. And your worried about Walmart!”
I’m more concerned that there are millions of credulous, orthographically-challenged people like Ann in this country.
Mr. Van Fleet–GREAT letter! So sad though to see the truly ignorant comments by a few people. The American public is perhaps the most ignorant citizenry of any developed country and that’s not an accident. Our rulers make sure of that and now the push is on to privatize schools and that’ll ensure a mind-fucked citizenry. Wal-Mart, not surprisingly, are major supporters of privatizing schools.
