If the addition of In-N-Out and Chipotle to the Broadway lineup didn’t slake your thirst for fast food, a KFC has arrived to bulk up the ranks. Anticipation has been building for years, even before the massive chicken chain broke ground and built its new location on the site of the infamously run-down Blue Heron Motel, previously owned by Floyd and Betty Squires. Read more about the new restaurant’s owner and how it came into its digs here.

To those braving the potential traffic snarl from today’s opening, good luck. To those less intrepid or perhaps feeling a little salty, Humboldt has a bevy of alternatives. If you have patience, Arcata’s Plaza Grill has a fried chicken dinner in its takeout rotation, as does Six Rivers Brewery, and Restaurant Five Eleven has a popular buttermilk fried chicken. Ferndale’s Fat Anne’s has fried chicken dinners and buckets that can be made gluten-free upon request, and the recently opened Couxp truck in Arcata features a lineup of fried chicken sandwiches. These represent just the crispy tip of the mountain of local options. Feel free to share your favorites with us.

  1. Terrible location. Are they using City workers to direct traffic for the drive-thru?! I would like to see Eureka support local healthy food, not more fast food chain crap.

  2. I just came from KFC Eureka. And at no fault of this KFC,If you are 40 or older, you will be very disappointed. KFC are no longer 11 herbs and spices. Their secret recipe is no more folks. Their chicken is horrible. A lot like In and Out Burger French fries. Of course you have to try it once. I know I won’t be going back. And at 41.00 for their 12 piece meal with 3 sides, WinCo has better chicken at a 3rd the price. No, I am not a WinCo employee.

  3. Not only is their food grossly overpriced considering its horrid quality, their economic impacts on a rural economy that’s already saturated in national hotel and restaurant poverty wages only make matters worse by requiring more and more county welfare subsidies.

Voters threw-out Eureka’s right-wing republican “trickle-down economics” city council majority and mayor for the first time in living memory…

    Who would notice?

  4. Lets see now, KFC sucked in Eureka twice, went out of business. Sucked in Fortuna , went out of business, Churches sucked in Eureka, went out of business. The true definition of insanity….
