The winter storm that came bearing down on the region — leaving thousands without power, shutting down major roadways, including sections of  U.S. Highway 101 and State Route 169, and bringing down trees — packed quite a punch. But the blustery weather isn’t over yet.

The National Weather Service reports more rain, gusty winds and snow is on the way, although snow levels are likely to rise to around 2,500 feet for now. Titlow Hill saw 16 inches.
The tempest kept Humboldt Bay Fire busy, with agency reporting 33 weather-related calls alone as well as “a vehicle extrication, a structure fire, and a gas leak in addition to medical aids and other incidents” for a total of 54 service calls, which is more than three times the daily average.

And, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office deputies traversed several miles of the snow-blocked Mattole Road — clearing trees and downed powerlines along the way — to rescue three trapped motorists. (Read more here.)
