There’s a damning leader on Bill Clinton in this week’s New Republic. (Subscription required, proles.) It’s entitled “Reduced Bill”:
The post-presidency is usually a good phase of a president’s life. At their best, these retirees largely extricate themselves from factional politics and remake themselves as servants of the common good. That’s basically what Clinton has done. True, he has made a fair amount of cash, speaking in Dubai and palling around with Ron Burkle. But he also claimed some important achievements through his foundation work. And, in the course of these good deeds, he rebuilt his reputation from his last ignominious years in office. He became a kind of Global President, or at least, the Crown Prince of Davos-land–a symbol of a prelapsarian era.
Even if Bill helps Hillary eke out a victory over Obama, he will have diminished these recent accomplishments. When you go to watch Clinton as he makes his case to small crowds in Podunk locations, you can’t help but view him differently. He loses his post-presidential luster and dignity, turning himself back into just another pol. And not an especially classy one.
Forget about Bubba — who you calling Podunk, Poindexter? You haven’t seen “not especially classy” yet.
And “small crowds”? Whose fault is that?

Duuuuuuuude… you mean, “titled.”
“Entitled” means a claim or right to something. “Entitled” can even mean “to give a title to,” as in, “Taking locale into consideration, she entitled her publication, ‘The North Coast Journal.'” But that’s a stretch – and according to my sources, “entitle” never means the title itself.
Not that your “alternative” rag cares about such things, I’m sure. Grammar is for us more traditional-type newspapers.
Carry on.
As long as we’re on the subject…
“Since” is a preposition referencing time.
“Because” indicates a cause or reason for something.
Evil: Since the building capacity was around 400, most seemed sure…
Evil + 1: …amplification was important since the microphone they were given…
Crazy delicious: …we’d been there since 3:30…
Popular usage is to use “since” when the speaker means “because.”
The Columbia Journalism Review agrees with pop culture. Nevertheless, I maintain the daily fight with my 3-year-old who has picked up popular usage from preschool. Her other favorite transgression is starting a sentence with, “Me and Mama…”
Bill thrilled the crowd at Redwood Acres.
…and all you got was dumped on for your own mistakes. DAMN that Bill!
When a public event is held, which agency is responsible for signing off on public restrooms?
Is it really true that when festivals are held, port-a-potties are provided as a convenience, not a legal requirement? I’d be surprised if that were true. Which agency failed in its approval of the event?
There were restrooms available until the BBQ place closed and also some were available in the Home Ec Building. When the Secret Service was doing their sweep, the bathrooms were closed, so there were no rest rooms available. It would have been a good idea to have some restrooms left open or some kind of arrangement made for port-a-potties. If there had been time to plan and prepare, maybe things would been more comfortable.
24 hours is more than enough time to arrange delivery of port-a-potties. It should be one of the first things you think about when large crowds are involved. Was there no one who had experience organizing this type of event? The Journal article implied you had at least one pro. This whole “we didn’t have time” excuse is getting old.
