Rootsy local act The Elderberry Rust String Band is a good time for those looking for a hoot and a holler with plenty of solid picking. Swing by the Basement at 8 p.m. for a cover-free show of Americana tunes with that oh-so-fine bluegrass swagger.

Music Tonight: Thursday, Jan. 30
Let January slip away with some vocal jazz courtesy of the Claire Bent Quintet. I’ve always enjoyed Ms. Bent’s versatile voice and her choice of a top backing band, which, last I checked (forgive me if I’m wrong) includes her dad Jim on drums. He once helped me with some upholstery for my guitar pedal […]

Swing by the Basement tonight at 8 p.m. for a free celebration of the music — and birthdays — of Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt, the pioneering jazz violinist and guitarist, respectively, who changed the world of music forever beginning in the 1930s with their group the Quintette du Hot Club de France, ground zero […]

The Basement is the place to be tonight for a sultry ride on the jazz train from downtown to the up-tempo neighborhood with stops all along Funk Street. Swizlo’s Mystery Lounge is the name of this joint, which will be helmed by the eponymous key-master from Object Heavy and beyond. Also on tap will be […]

Music Tonight: Thursday, Jan. 2
Go on, enjoy yourself with a little jazz tonight with some local experts in the field. I’m talking about the Alley Cats, who are playing the Basement tonight and not the Speakeasy, so “Opera” is therefore removed from the front of their name. No cover, and doors open at 7:30 p.m.

Music Tonight: Tuesday, Dec. 31
It’s the long goodbye, coming in early in the week this year, and I’m going to make a few suggestions, not in chronological order, but rather paired by location and style. For instance, if you are interested in some DJ’ed dance parties, you can check out the big EDM blow at the Arcata Theatre Lounge […]

Music Tonight: Saturday, Dec. 28
Here are two very different shows happening at roughly the same time, 9 p.m.-ish, and for more or less the same price. The Basement is featuring guitarist Greg Douglass, possibly most famous for his time with the Steve Miller Band, during which he co-wrote the hit Jungle Love. He’ll be sitting in with Grateful Dead-ites […]

Comedy Tonight: Sunday, Dec. 15
Rising star Bay Area comedian Paul Conyers brings his stand-up chops to the Basement tonight for two sets, at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., so you have options if you are more or less of a Sunday nighthawk. The $20 admission is not a bad deal for a headlining comedian who fills larger venues in […]

Music Tonight: Thursday, Dec. 5
The Alley Cats have taken the “Opera” out of their name tonight because rather than playing at the Speakeasy, they will be hitting the stage for a free gig at the Basement instead. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Speaking of opera and 7:30 p.m., up at Fulkerson Hall you can enjoy a recital and Opera […]

A touring ensemble of DJ True Justice, Vocab Slick and Z-Man, traveling under the moniker The Ninth annual Slap Frost Tour hits the Basement tonight at 8 p.m., where the roadsters will mix and mingle with some of our local heroes. Representing the 707 […]

The Basement is once again the place to be when it comes to pre-gaming for the coming end of the work week. Tonight, the doors open at 7 p.m., and sometime after that you will find a performance by one of our county’s more unique and industrious gigging acts, the Blueberry Hill Boogie Band. If […]
