Savage Henry Comedy Club is once again hosting Metal Monday, an early (7 p.m.) all-ages throwdown that starts the week out right. Tonight’s link-up is particularly fine, with post-post grunge band Gnawed On coming down the mountain with Mystery Meat, Abandons and Only Echoes.
Mystery Meat
Music Tonight: Saturday, Dec. 28
Here are two very different shows happening at roughly the same time, 9 p.m.-ish, and for more or less the same price. The Basement is featuring guitarist Greg Douglass, possibly most famous for his time with the Steve Miller Band, during which he co-wrote the hit Jungle Love. He’ll be sitting in with Grateful Dead-ites […]
Music Tonight: Saturday, June 17
The Freeks are a phuzzy as phuck Los Angeles psych band featuring members of Fu Manchu, Claw Hammer and Backbiter. They are known for playing it loud, hard and weird. Eureka is lucky enough to host that glorious noise tonight, specifically the Shanty, where the fellas will be joined by Sky Screamer and Mystery Meat. […]
Songs for Summer
As a music-obsessed teen in the late-1990s, I often found myself at odds with prevailing sensibilities, an alienating experience that has actually helped me over the years. How? Well, to paraphrase my cousin Jet, the secret of eternal relevance is a withering distrust of most current popular culture. So while some of my peers were […]
Music Tonight: Monday, April 24
Here we go again, another Metal Monday over at Savage Henry Comedy Club at 7 p.m. Los Angeles grind band Cancer Christ joins forces with a squad of local acts, including Dead Drift, Mystery Meat and Human Soup Hot Tub, the latter of which wins the ignoble distinction of making me gag every time I […]
Color Wheel
Well friends, it’s the beginning of flower season again and I could not be more pleased. I’m talking calendulas, daffodils, trilliums, California poppies (not the band, but they are fine, too). I have an abstract relationship with flowers, in that I encounter them as a cheerful addition to my daily life without choosing to become […]
Music Tonight: Monday, March 13
With St. Patrick’s Day on Friday and spring coming in a week, I am cautiously optimistic about seeing an end to the frequent dead night or two that the winter brings to the local music scene. Another good sign is that tonight features an installment of Metal Mondays over at Savage Henry at 7 p.m. […]
Music Tonight: Friday, March 10
Speaking of Canada, there’s another native son from that land coming through the Thing (833 H St.) in Arcata tonight at 7 p.m. Shane Koyczan is a spoken word poet who has done the (near) impossible and cracked open a touring career out of his poetry, built largely on the back of his breakthrough piece […]
Beautiful Era
I have probably mentioned here before that I like going for walks, often at odd hours to avoid other people. This isn’t out of any misanthropic impulse, but to stay out of the way of traffic, which is the pedestrian’s natural enemy. They aren’t long walks, either, I just need a space and time where […]
