While most areas received between half an inch to an inch and a half, Honeydew received almost 4 inches of rain. Eureka (at Woodley Island) saw 0.71 inches, […]

Rolling With the Punches: Fundraising Losses for Rural Firefighters
The Orick Volunteer Fire Department covers a lot of ground for just 11 volunteers — its service area stretches from Big Lagoon north to the Humboldt County line. Secretary-treasurer Judy Hagood makes the department’s shoestring budget work but this year the firefighters will be making do with a little less. “I don’t think we’re going […]
My Hometown Has Changed. Or Maybe I have.
Maybe it’s because I had just finished re-reading a news story about a family member’s murder. Maybe it’s because I had just written up a press release about a homicide investigation. The decision came after a long discussion among the supervisors and public comment by a resident of the Petrolia area, who shared concerns […]

Three Cal Fire personnel were transported by ambulance to Redwood Memorial Hospital with minor […]
Honeydew’s Hangout
For decades Honeydew has been a one-stop town: one stop sign, one school and one store. At the height of the logging boom in the 1950s there was a community center, a church and a service station, but for as long as many locals can remember, the only site for congregation has been Honeydew’s general […]
Water Theft in Honeydew, Too
Claire Trower on Wilder Ridge reports that the Honeydew Volunteer Fire Department has been forced to remove the faucet handle of its pump after some less-than-ethical agricultural entrepreneurs stole several barrels of water from the VFD’s reserves. Boo. It’s only the latest of several recent SoHum water thefts.
