Job seekers, an announcement: You may now go apply for a job at Wal-Mart in Eureka. The job announcements have just gone up on all those fun sites the unemployed pore over seeking something, something, to do with their groceries-yearning, bills-owing or parent-harangued selves. One site notes they’re looking for a pharmacy manager (by the way, Cloney’s, Safeway and CVS are also looking for pharmacy types). Another, AllRetailJobs.com, heralds the abundance:
FRONT END
Cashiers, Customer Service Desk, Cart Pushers, People Greeters
RECEIVING
Stockers and Unloaders
SALES ASSOCIATES
Associates and Supervisors for all Departments
OVERNIGHT
Maintenance, Stockers
They’re taking applications at the Wal-Mart Hiring Center, 301 7th Street; at the Employment Development Department/Workforce Services at 409 K Street; and online.
Wal-Mart haters, an announcement: It looks like the nearly 3,000 of you who’ve signed that petition to keep Wal-Mart outta here have your job cut out for you. It’s apparently still coming. However, the site where you can sign the petition is also still up.
Now go forth, warriors. For you who want to work at Wal-Mart, mind your motto (well, Wal-Mart’s): “Your spark makes us Wal-Mart.” For you who want to stop the Big Smile, maybe just flip that around to “Wal-Mart makes us spark.”

anyone who works there is not welcome around me, ok?
Uh oh, the Target employee at 4:52 has drawn a line in the sand.
That’s funny @ TEE HEE. I don’t support walmart but if I someone really needs a job and they end up working at walmart I feel sorry for them but I am not going spurn them.
I cant wait untill they open so I can point and laugh at everybody with miniscule wages and no decent insurance. Ha I can see them now!
I hate Wal-Mart. But a lot of people hate not being able to feed their kids more. This article may be a great indictment of all that is wrong in the Wal-mart corporate structure,, but it is coming at the expense of people trying to put food on their plates. Not trying to change mind about Wal-Mart, but this makes anyone trying out there right now to make ends meet look like the badguys.
Can someone point out to me the companies that are hiring and have great wages and insurance? I must have missed the memo that the unemployment rate in Humboldt is below 3%
I wonder if the NCJ will solicit advertising from Wal-Mart?
WalMart doesn’t do “local” advertising, except in the form of newspaper inserts, which are printed elsewhere and trucked in. They prefer daily papers, as their customers are the coupon-clipping, processed-food-eating demographic.
TO MR. ROB…. HARDLY ANYONE IN THIS AREA HAS A GOOD WAGE AND INSURANCE. What kind of horrible person are you to suggest laughing at people who are struggling? That comment doesn’t even have anything to do with walmart. Don’t you read the news? Incredibly hireable people can’t even find jobs right now….and hardly anyone around here offers benefits. Selfish moron.
It’s OK, Walmart sells Duckman cartoons, which in turn supports Richard Salzman, since he gets a cut of the pie.
No Walmart, you are a self righteous twat. Consider that some people don’t have as many options as you. All you’re saying is you hate poor and desperate people.
The only way WalMart can make it is on the pink slime profit margin. Go ahead, buy some pink slime. Safeway has sworn off the stuff, had Walmart? Target?
And heres the rub, its all pink slime!!!
Safeway has said that they won’t carry it to sell directly, not that they won’t carry products made with it.
People who have the luxury of complaining about Walmart and food additives have never known true deprivation.
And WalMart offers succor to those who suffer from “true deprivation”?
Don’t like Wal-Mart? Don’t shop/work at Wal-Mart…………….
I think the reason most people in Humboldt are against Walmart is because they won’t have an excuse to not have a job anymore. “No mom, I can’t go get a job at Walmart, I have to post angry stuff to my blog! Can you bring me another veggie-tofu hotpocket?”
It is really a good thing Humboldt County is too wet for basements.
Actually most folks in Humboldt are not against Wal-Mart, just the loud ones.
I can’t wait for WalMart to open, so that I can not shop there.
I have 18 years of education with 99 weeks of unemployment gone, I will be applying.
Walmart has just as much right as anyone in this country to open a store here. We also have the right to shop where we wish. If the local dollars end up there, so be it.
I’m glad that I am one of the few who has a good job. Sadly, not everyone does. Walmart will give the lower-income residents a welcome alternative to Winco and KMart, as well as possible employment. Humboldt County needs every job that it can draw into the area. I’m not going to discourage that, even if it is a giant out-of-town corporation.
I can’t believe that Humboldt County only has 3% unemployment. I moved away from there because there is no jobs. Oh excuse me if you smoke or grow I guess you can say that is a job…. Way to go —– for destroying a nice county with your BS.
As far as I know, there aren’t too many jobs anywhere for people who write things like “I moved away from there because there is no jobs.”
Copy editor at times-standard…
As a minimum wage worker (HSU student) I welcome Wal-Mart. So many students end up leaving or struggle a lot because there are not enough jobs around here.
If job creating programs were publicized more, maybe the unemployed would be less excited about Wal-Mart coming in.
