The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office identified the body found offshore of Humboldt Bay on Wednesday as Fortuna resident Matthew Finley. He was 67.
The brief release offered few details but said the U.S. Coast Guard made the recovery. According to media reports, the body was spotted by someone out fishing in the ocean yesterday afternoon.
“This case is still under investigation and the cause and manner of death have not yet been determined,” the HCSO release states. “Mr. Finley’s next of kin have been notified and an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.”
The sheriff’s office also extended “its heartfelt sympathy to Mr. Finley’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
