Security National is “re-domicile-ing” its headquarters to Louisiana, Rob Arkley said in a radio interview aired on New Year’s Day, and the Lost Coast Outpost says the firm has been laying off workers.
“Tax wise it’s kind of a no brainer,” Arkley told KINS Radio’s Brian Papstein on Tuesday’s prerecorded
edition of Talk Shop. “We’re creating a good tax efficient strategy so that California doesn’t whack a whole bunch of our money.”
Arkley hasn’t returned a call from the Journal inquiring about the layoff reports.

From a small business point of view, I understand why he’s moving, and am not surprised. Also, before you reach for the rotten tomatoes, I’m a registered Democrat, a bleeding-heart Liberal to boot. Yes, those taxes go to help California, but, on the flip side, when you can’t make a living owning and running a small business (my family has owned several businesses in this community for the past 30-odd years) when just about all of your profits go to the State Franchise Tax Board. California is a real tough state in which to own and conduct business. Entrepreneurs work their asses off for little to no return. Yes, we need to help each other out, and yes, the money to do so needs to come from all citizens, but the system isn’t working. The system is broken, and continuing to layer tax after tax after tax onto the state’s private and corporate citizens isn’t the answer.
Okay, cue the tomatoes.
Last time Arkley was on he confidently predicted a Romney landslide, and claimed that his east-west rail would be built quickly and that its main product would be lumber.

As far as small business owners – if many of these “so-called” intellectual elites overpaid for their homes leading to extremely “rigged mortgages” which causes the homeowner/business owner to overpay on their home, could it be that the theft of taxes on the “home side of economic balance sheets” has caused a downward trend in available money to pay for “small business needs like tenant rents, payroll, etc…?”
The only way a small business owner makes it in America is:
1) No employees at all (which means that owners actually work instead of playing)
2) That the small business model must retain high consumer market share to keep generating cash flows. (problem is that local small businesses are not different enough than what “online services may provide”.
In general, too many small business owners love the allure of ownership, but don’t have the smarts to make it very far or long. Ever notice how the older folks in the community who rent in older buildings seem to last the longest?

I can tell you how Arkley made his money. He has a keen eye for undervalued property.
When Katrina hit he bought up scores of properties in the New Orleans area and restored the property to productive assets.
The man takes risks, and for those risks he has succeeded because he demands excellence from his employees. In return his generosity to send employee’s children on to college is not matched by any other employer in the area that I know of.
