Humboldt works its magic in mysterious ways. When Rod Anderson graduated from Arcata High School, he looked elsewhere for opportunities. During a stint as a dairyman, that tap on the shoulder came from a furniture store. Next thing Rod knew, he was surrounded by comfy sofas. But the call of the coast could not be ignored. Anderson returned to his Humboldt roots with a plan in hand.

Anderson Delta Mattress and Sofa Outlet (705 Fourth St., Eureka, 707-442-4510) opened its doors on Feb. 1, 2000. By now Anderson was a seasoned furniture salesman as well as manager. He knew there was a need for affordable furniture in this remote geographical area. “Our biggest challenge is getting goods to us as we are three hours from nowhere behind the Redwood Curtain. Freight,” he says. “It’s simpler now with [State Route] 299 so longer trailers can come. Some places would not bring goods here.” Big rigs navigating those narrow twisting roads and steep grades of old State Route 299 must have been hair raising, no matter how stunning the landscape — same with the old U.S. Highway 101, for that matter.

Even now, Anderson says, “It’s hard to order big things online.” True enough, but that does give the opportunity to support a local business that has your dream California king set here in Humboldt, ready to deliver it to your door without the drama.

Whether selling sleepers or sectionals, Anderson surfed his sofa success, expanding into a much bigger building in 2013. Thirteen years later, he is still riding that wave, making sure Humboldtians have wicked designer table lamps to light up their stylish recliners.

Anderson found someone wonderful in Humboldt when a mutual friend introduced him to his wife, Paula. They raised their two children as their business grew. The Andersons understand what young couples need. He loves seeing “the happiness it brings to customers. Starting their first home and all that excitement,” as couples choose items for their new life together.

He points out that it is more than just young lovers with stars in their eyes who build their lives in Humboldt. “School has just ended. People transfer from dorms to permanent housing. They need furniture and mattresses to get established in Humboldt County,” he says. The ambitious need a solid night’s sleep and a sweet place to hang, like that retro sofa may be just right. “Trends cycle then reappear,” he says. “The retro look always comes to the forefront of what people are looking for.” Can’t beat classic styles for a vibe that tells your friends you have left the days of shabby student furniture behind.

Like many small business owners, Anderson cherishes the joy of being his own boss, saying, “Having the latitude to do what you think instead of corporate world where it is dictated what you do.” This means he can pick what furniture he carries based on the needs of his customers rather than a corporation’s sales targets. He can support the community by making sure that Humboldt’s remoteness does not leave our comfort or decor lacking.

Anderson Delta not only supports our community as we recline, but also as we grow — that includes both children and food! Anderson Delta sponsors the Humboldt County Fair Supreme Grand Champion Lamb. Whether it is 4-H or Future Farmers of America, the Andersons are proud to support opportunities for Humboldt’s youth. It is no surprise, since one daughter now teaches high school agriculture, sowing the seeds for the next generation of farmers and ranchers. Their other daughter is a hairstylist, and although neither daughter followed the song of the sofa, they worked in the family business for a while, as did their grandma. “Mom worked for me for a few years, too. Generational,” he says wistfully, remembering working with her before she passed away. Humboldt gave the Anderson family exactly what it needed: time together.

My Humboldt Life is: “Great! I love the mountains, the rivers, the ocean.” Rod enthuses. “I grew up here. Sometimes we see sunshine, sometimes we don’t.” That does not stop him and Paula as they whiz around on their electric scooters. “We’ve been working our way around the new trail from Eureka to Arcata. It’s so much fun being out in the fresh air.” Spoken like a true Humboldtian.
