Kris Patzlaff and Loryn White will be the featured artists for the next exhibit at the Arcata Artisans Gallery on the Arcata Plaza — from Nov. 9 through Dec. 6.
From making jewelry at home to heading the Jewelry and Small Metals program at Cal Poly Humboldt, Patzlaff has led a life devoted to that art form — and her finely crafted pieces reflect that devotion.
“My studio practice has been a consistent process of creating jewelry that has been assembled in a similar way of an assemblage artist,” said Patzlaff. “As I tend to work in a series, there are often parts and pieces that remain left behind. For this featured artist exhibition, I am revisiting these parts with a fresh eye and creating new work. Honestly, I am just having fun in the studio, creating whatever seems right that day.”

An elective class in college sparked a love of ceramics for White. After earning a degree in Fisheries from HSU, and many years working as a biologist, she turned that love into a new career path.
In the new exhibit White says she “continues to pursue all things aquatic, focusing mostly on seaweed, bubbles, and fish for the themes of her work.” She uses colored slips, mono-printing, and carving methods to achieve her vision.
Patzlaff, White and 20 other local artists joined talents to create the Arcata Artisans Cooperative. Their gallery is open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. every day, on the west side of the Arcata Plaza, where one of the artists is always at the counter.
