At least that’s what director M. Night Shyamalan envisions. The trailer for his upcoming sci-fi blockbuster After Earth was released today and features quick shots of some of the footage the crew shot amongst our redwoods back in April. Also, monkeys. Enjoy. The film is scheduled to be released in June 2013.

No Escape
Show of hands. Who out there is fidgeting over the encroaching Dec. 21 end of the Mayan calendar? Anyone? Yeah. I didn’t think so. Now, who here is losing it thinking about how close we are to Dec. 25 calendar square. Uh huh. Thought so. People be nervous. The end of the world is […]
If You’ve Never Seen a Live Mudslide… (VIDEO)
… here’s some video taken a few days ago of just such a thing creeping across Highway 101 about three miles south of Crescent City — with people scurrying out of the way of falling trees and everything! (No one was hurt. Chill.) Also, we nominate the video’s creator for “Most Beavis-like Laugh of 2012.” […]
We Are Wet
And getting wetter. We got a little break Monday after a half week’s worth of rain flooded many local waterways, leading to road closures, landslides, power outages and Humboldtians questioning how horrible SoCal really is. Now the T-S reports HumCo could have as much as another four inches of rain in store tonight and tomorrow. […]

Weed: Where We’re At
We had our shot. In 2010, California voters had a historic chance to regulate, control and tax marijuana and put our state on the fast track to weedtopia. Oh, man, especially for us here in HumCo, wouldn’t that have been something? We could have cashed in on that Humboldt brand and secured the future of […]
They’ve ‘Found It’
If, like me, you happen to be blessed to count a few smart people as your amigos — solid four, I reckon — you’ve undoubtedly heard over and again that TED talks are the actual reason the Internet was invented. The slick, succinct talks featuring camera-friendly experts highlighting “ideas worth sharing” are a well of […]
So, Jimmy Kimmel Doesn’t Think Humboldt State’s New Weed Institute Sounds All That Necessary
Our legacy has been secured. Again. As should have been expected, Humboldt State University’s announcement that it was firing up an Interdisciplinary Marijuana Research Institute was picked up by significant news organizations across the web — CBS News, the Huffington Post, Italian Rolling Stone. Sure, sure. But none of that coverage will be as remembered […]

Top 10 Movember Music Makers
Alert: Whether you’ve been hip to it or not, for over a decade the 11th month of the year has been rechristened Movember and been dedicated to the growth of male upper lip facial pubes. Now you know. Known as “mustaches,” these unfortunate fashion statements are cultivated in an effort to raise awareness for men’s […]
A Better Drum Circle
You’ve spent time in the Humboldt nation. You know that percussion, when allowed in public spaces, is a magnet for even more percussion. Surely, you’ve seen these gatherings of spontaneous musicians produce harmonious, uplifting community and, at other times, be a cacophonous earsore. It depends on who’s feeling most confident that day. Choose your drum […]
