Dogs are no longer allowed at Eureka’s Friday Night Market and Fourth of July festival after the city issued a press release about the policy change on June 25.

The city cited that crowds have grown over the years with more than 13,000 people attending last year’s Fourth of July festival and some 7,000 people at recent Friday Night Markets.

“This policy is focused on safety and prevention,” Eureka Police Chief Brian Stephens said in the press release. “With large crowds, loud noises, and fireworks, these events can be extremely stressful for dogs. It’s just not a safe setting. We’re asking the community to help us protect both pets and people by keeping dogs at home.”

The social media accounts of Friday Night Market and Humboldt Made have echoed this reasoning, stating that “every year, we see avoidable incidents where both dogs and people get hurt.”

Signs will be displayed at event entrances with reminders posted on social media about this new policy, according to the press release. The next Friday Night Market will be on June 27 and the Eureka Fourth of July festival will occur on the following Friday in Old Town Eureka.

  1. Wow. No psychotic pro-dog comments?
Most people around these parts who have dogs are the worse dog owners I have ever seen.
They don’t have their dogs under control.
As hunters have observed, ‘A dog is as smart as their master.’
There are a lot of dumb people who own dogs around here.
