On Dec. 15, newly elected members Meredith Matthews and Kimberley White were seated at the dais, forming the city’s first all-woman council, joining just a handful of cities across California to ever do so. Councilmember Sarah Schaefer was also unanimously selected to serve as mayor for the next year and Matthews was elected by her fellow councilmembers to serve as vice mayor.
“I’m excited to serve in this new capacity and to keep giving back to my community I’ve been in so long and I’m also looking forward to our powerhouse all-female council,” Schaefer said in a city announcement. “Congratulations to both Meredith and Kimberley and I look forward to continuing to serve with them.”
The next Arcata City Council meeting will take place Dec. 21.
