Local residents will get a glimpse of what scientists predict will be normal in the years to come when King Tide events raise water levels along the coast next week, and the city of Arcata is asking for help photographing the impact to help plan for sea level rise.

The tides, which are expected to peak at 10:18 a.m. on Jan 11 and 11:08 a.m. on Jan. 12, will raise water levels in Humboldt Bay, as well as some local streams and rivers. Arcata officials say photographing the events year-to-year provides valuable data for city planners considering the future impacts of sea level rise.

Anyone who captures photographs is asked to send them to [email protected] and shared with the statewide documenting effort coastal.ca.gov/kingtides.

The city will also be hosting a virtual King Tide and Sea Level discussion at 2 p.m. on Jan. 12 with Community Development Director David Loya. (Find a link to the Zoom meeting here.)

The map below details locations from which the city is hoping to get photographs. And the city urges anyone going out to witness or photograph the events to follow safety precautions around the water, as well as health guidelines designed to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
