With COVID-19 cases spiking throughout the state and country, California Gov. Gavin Newsom has called a press conference for 12:30 p.m. today at which he may announce a new stay-at-home order in the state.

Newsom said during a press conference Monday that if rising infection rates continued, the state would have to take "much more dramatic — arguably drastic — action," including a potential widespread stay-at-home order akin to the one issued in March. And the spike in cases has continued, both statewide and locally.

The Humboldt County Joint Information Center sent out an advisory urging media to watch the press conference, saying the governor "will be making important announcements regarding the state's COVID-19 response."

The state confirmed 12,221 new cases yesterday as hospitalizations continue to increase, with 8,240 COVID-19 patients, including 1,890 in intensive care, throughout the state. Locally, Humboldt County is in the midst of a spike that has seen 221 new cases confirmed over the past 10 days. A state database indicates five patients are currently hospitalized locally with the disease, with another five patients suspected to be COVID-positive but awaiting test results.
