Air quality throughout most of Humboldt County has improved substantially, despite fires burning to its east, north and south, the North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District announced this morning.

According to an advisory issued today, "overall good air quality conditions" are expected today from Rio Dell to Trinidad, in Orleans, Weithpec, Willow Creek and Garberville. Hoopa, with the Red Salmon Fire burning to its immediate east, is still listed as "unhealthy for sensitive groups."

The district credits the brief period of light rain with temporarily dampening fire behavior and smoke impacts in the region, but warns a return to warmer weather over the weekend could worsen conditions and that wind patterns Saturday and Sunday could lead to smoke being pushed west toward the coast.
