FDA: Avoid Hand Sanitizers Containing Methanol or Wood Alcohol

The Humboldt County Joint Information Center has warned the public to avoid hand sanitizer products containing methanol or wood alcohol, and posted a link on Facebook to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's list of dangerous products.

Today, FDA warned not to use hand sanitizer products containing methanol or wood alcohol, which can be toxic when absorbed through the skin and life-threatening when ingested.
We’ve seen an increase in hand sanitizer products that have tested positive for methanol contamination. State officials also reported recent adverse events from adults and children ingesting hand sanitizer contaminated with methanol, including blindness, hospitalizations, and death.
FDA recommends consumers immediately stop using these hand sanitizers and dispose in a hazardous waste container or as recommended by local waste management center. Do not flush or pour these products down the drain or mix with other liquids.
We’re communicating with manufacturers & distributors of these dangerous products about recalling them. Here is a list of FDA-tested and recalled hand sanitizer products.
