Public Health Confirms One New COVID-19 Case; Means of Transmission Confirmed for All Active Cases

Humboldt County Public Health is reporting one new COVID-19 case today, which brings the county’s total to 94.
According to today's county press release, the means of transmission has been confirmed for all active cases.
The new case comes after a two-week spike that began May 9, with a total of 38 cases confirmed since then, including a cluster of cases at the Alder Bay Living Facility in Eureka, and two hospitalized deaths from the virus.

Of the 94 cases, 53 were acquired through contact with a known case, 24 were acquired through travel outside of the area and 17 were acquired through community transmission, meaning they contracted the virus through an unknown source in the local community.
The new case comes after a two-week spike that began May 9, with a total of 38 cases confirmed since then, including a cluster of cases at the Alder Bay Living Facility in Eureka, and two hospitalized deaths from the virus.
The first confirmed COVID-19 death in Humboldt County occurred May 17, when a 97-year-old woman living at Alder Bay died at a local hospital. Another Alder Bay resident died Tuesday at St. Joseph Hospital. To date, Alder Bay has seen a total of seven residents and seven staff members test positive.
Today's positive case was confirmed after the Public Health Laboratory processed 34 samples and corporate labs reported results from another 378, for a total of 412.
Basics of COVID-19
The California Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control, state that symptoms of novel coronavirus include cough and shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, or at least two of the following: fever, chills, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat or a new loss of taste or smell.
Emergency warning signs needing immediate medical attention include difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion or inability to awaken, and bluish lips or face.
In an emergency situation: Call ahead to the emergency room or inform the 911 operator of the possibility of a COVID-19 infection and, if possible, put on a face mask. St. Joseph and Redwood Memorial hospitals have opened tents on their campuses to begin screening patients who have “significant” symptoms consistent with the COVID-19 virus. The general hours of operation for the tents is 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. but that is subject to change.
Symptoms or possible exposure: In the case of a possible exposure with symptoms — fever and cough or shortness of breath — contact your doctor’s office or the county Department of Health and Human Services, which has a hotline that can be reached during business hours at [email protected] or at (707) 441-5000. Residents seeking medical advice or questions about testing are asked to contact Public Health at [email protected] or at (707) 445-6200. St. Joseph Health has also set up a virtual assessment tool as an aid to assess risk factors for contracting the illness, which can be found at www.providence.org/patients-and-visitors/coronavirus-advisory.

One additional positive case of COVID-19 was confirmed today, bringing to 94 the total number of Humboldt County residents who have tested positive for the virus.
Contact investigations have determined the means of transmission for all confirmed cases. Of the 94 cases, 53 were acquired through contact with a known case, 24 were acquired through travel outside of the area and 17 were acquired through community transmission.
The Humboldt County Public Health Laboratory and all other commercial testing sources each have tested a total of 2,798 county residents for the virus.
