COVID-19 Update: Social Distancing, Suspended Sports Seasons and Staying Put for Spring Break

State and local health officials are asking residents to keep their distance from others, at least for the rest of the month, in an effort to stem the tide of the coronavirus’ spread.
Following in the footsteps of guidance issued by the California Department of Public Health last night, the county Department of Health and Human Service released similar advice this afternoon, including keeping a distance of 6 feet between people and cancelling or postponing larger group events.
“The intent is to create physical space between people,” county Health Officer Teresa Frankovich said in the release. “This guidance is considered necessary to protect the public’s health.” There are currently no known active cases of COVID-19 in Humboldt County.
The county of Humboldt declared a public health emergency yesterday.
Many events in the area have also been canceled or postponed, including performances at the North Coast Repertory Theatre, the Eureka Theater and Dell’Arte.
Humboldt State University and College of the Redwoods both announced the suspension of spring sports season, and CR has also put classes on hold from March 23-27 to prepare for the what campus officials described as “the eventuality that we will need to suspend face-to-face instruction.”
Students who purchased a Homeward Bound ticket — HSU’s charter bus program that offers round trips to San Francisco and Los Angeles at a discounted rate — will be able to get a refund. As of today, nine students have canceled their travel plans out of two buses that will carry 104 students, HSU spokesperson Grant Scott-Goforth said, noting that the number could change.
The university will also be sending students specific guidance on what symptoms to watch for but there is not a system for monitoring students living on or off campus for the illness.

HSU, meanwhile, is advising students to stay in the area for spring break, which starts Monday, and is also expanding student resources, including keeping dining services and the health center open during the week.Effective immediately, Humboldt State University has cancelled all intercollegiate spring sports. This is to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, and is based on a @gccaaorg decision as well as guidelines by local health officials.
