Focaccia by the Pietrinis
When in Rome … make a colorful Roman hand gesture in disappointment, for the Pietrini brothers Fulvio (who does the baking) and Flavio are somehow in Humboldt instead, at the Old Town Farmers Market selling their marvelous focaccia at the stall with the rainbow lettering. The $5 squares of heavenly bread are embellished with olive oil, rosemary, olives, maybe some artichoke, a little red pepper, some garlic (*kisses fingers). Grazie mille.
Best New Restaurant
Umami Sushi and Japanese Kitchen
After 14 years at Sushi Spot, Jaime Osorio took over the McKinleyville location with his own Umami Sushi and Japanese Kitchen. And it looks like the maki, nigiri and specialty rolls have caught on with the sushi counter culture. A scant three months since its grand opening and Umami Sushi and Japanese Kitchen has won the coveted Best New Restaurant title. Kampai!
