Humboldt County Public Health confirmed two new COVID-19 cases today, making a total of 19 for the week and bringing the countywide tally to 129, as well as another hospitalization.
The news comes after Wednesday saw nine cases confirmed — matching the county’s single day high set back in early April — as well as one in a Humboldt County resident who had been residing in Trinity County for two weeks. Five new cases were confirmed Thursday and with today’s results, two dozen have been confirmed since June 12. The spike comes as Humboldt County continues to re-open various aspects of the local economy, most recently announcing that gyms, bars and movie theaters can begin opening as soon as today if they have safety plans in place certified by the county.
Today’s results came after 176 samples were tested.
To date, 74 of Humboldt County’s cases are believed to trace back to a known contact with someone confirmed to have the virus, 27 are believed to have been acquired through travel out of the area and 23 are believed to be the result of community transition, meaning the person who tested positive had no known contacts to another case and had not traveled outside the local area. The origins of five cases remain under investigation. Fifteen people have been hospitalized locally with COVID-19 and four have died, all residents at Alder Bay Assisted Living.
Nationally, 2.4 million cases have been confirmed with 124,325 deaths, including 200,461 cases in California, including 5,812 fatalities. California’s numbers have been rising sharply in recent days, with 4,890 new cases confirmed Wednesday alone.
Humboldt County Public Health is urging residents who aren’t experiencing symptoms to get tested free of charge at the mobile testing site at Redwood Acres Fairgrounds. (People experiencing symptoms should contact a healthcare provider, officials say.) Asymptomatic individuals can make an appointment to be tested by visiting https://Lhi.care/covidtesting or calling (888) 634-1123. Tests will be administered free of charge, whether or not people have health insurance.
Basics of COVID-19
The California Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control, state that symptoms of novel coronavirus include cough and shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, or at least two of the following: fever, chills, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat or a new loss of taste or smell.
Emergency warning signs needing immediate medical attention include difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion or inability to awaken, and bluish lips or face.
In an emergency situation:
Call ahead to the emergency room or inform the 911 operator of the possibility of a COVID-19 infection and, if possible, put on a face mask.

In the case of a possible exposure with symptoms — fever and cough or shortness of breath — contact your doctor’s office or the county Department of Health and Human Services, which has a hotline that can be reached during business hours at covidinfo@co.humboldt.ca.us or at (707) 441-5000. Nationally the fake news media is hyping the “SPIKE in new cases” for all it’s worth. New cases doesn’t mean inevitable mortal or fatal outcomes. Increase in “cases” is the result of all the testing President Trump made possible. The demonrats on the left will, as the election draws nearer, get totally insane. I personally called the Humboldt County Health Dept. to question the 4 death attributed to covid-19 virus. I was told that the 4 people who were lionized in the hyper biased Times Standard did NOT die FROM covid-19. They died WITH covid-19 exposure which = + test. I hope I live to be 92 – 101 yrs of age.
The big question is WHY are death numnbers being lied about, inflated, and misrepresented by our elected officials?
