I don’t know who held the title up ’til now, but Eureka has a new king of sociopathic cruelty, and his name is Donovan Nathaniel Baltzley.

A warning: If you can’t stand the thought of something horrible happening to the dog pictured here, you should probably stop reading this post.

You may remember Baltzley’s name. Last year he pleaded guilty to killing his girlfriend’s family dog, a schnauzer-poodle mix named Sarah Lou, in 2008. After stealing and murdering the adorable creature, Baltzley pretended to help the family search for her, according to the Eureka Police Department.

Later, after he and his girlfriend separated, Baltzley set up a MySpace account in Sarah Lou’s name, then sent friend requests to the dead dog’s family.

At Baltzley’s September trial, Judge Joyce Hinrichs opted to suspend his three-year prison sentence in favor of a five-year probation that included a year of anger management courses, regular visits with a psychologist and a restraining order to keep him away from the dead dog’s family.

He should have been thrown in jail, evidently: Yesterday he was arrested and charged with two new counts of animal cruelty. According to an EPD press release issued today, after his trial Baltzley was inexplicably allowed to move in with a Eureka family that included two small Maltese dogs, one of whom, Bentley, is pictured above. “Just prior to Bentley’s death,” the release continues,

he began to show irrational fear of Baltzley. On January 7th, when family members got home from work, they found Bentley under a bed, deceased. Circumstantial evidence suggests the dog did not die of natural causes and Baltzley was the only person with an opportunity to harm the dog.

A month later, Baltzley moved in with another family, this one with four dogs. After about a week these dogs, too, began to display “irrational fear,” as the EPD calls it. Somehow I suspect it was quite rational.

Several days later, family members came home and found their small terrier, Rusty, missing. Rusty was about 8 years old and had lived in the same trailer park for his entire life. Rusty had never wandered off, on his own, during this time. Rusty was never found. Several days later, family members came home and found their small deer-legged chihuahua, Pepe, severely injured and hiding under a bed. Again, circumstantial evidence suggests that Baltzley was the only person with an opportunity to harm Pepe. Pepe had to be put to sleep because of his injuries. A neighbor heard one of the victim’s dogs “screaming” in pain during the time period these crimes occurred.

Baltzley also has two restraining orders and one felony arrest in his past for domestic violence, according to the Times-Standard. A trial date for his latest charges has not yet been set.

  1. I am so glad he is behind bars. When he was given probation for killing Sarah Lou our family was devastated. We knew it would only be a matter of time until he did it again. And we were proven right. Much to our dismay. Now lets see what the DA and the Judge do with him now.

  2. What a shame that it couldn’t be arranged that he share his cell with a large pit bull that also had “anger management” problems.

  3. Let’s just hope fellow prisoners treat animal abusers the same way they treat child molesters!!

  4. Suspended sentence? What was the judge thinking? People don’t kidnap and kill animals because of “anger management” issues! That was so stupid!
Everyone knows that serial killers start out with animals.

  5. I want justice for Bentley.. he wasent just a dog he was my child! my heart is so broken and lost with out him!! He was the perfect lil boy anyone could have asked for.. and how Donovan could of looked into his eyes and be able to kill him is beyond me!! I dont see how anyone could do this!! The news didnt mention that the day we kicked him out I also found Heroin in my house!! I hope this bastard gets what he deserves..excuse my language.. I love you Bentley

  6. I am so glad this psycho was brought to justice!! I am so sorry for all the families that lost their pets and for all the pets that have had to suffer, I hope this is the end!! I knew Bentley and he was the sweetest dog and had a family that loved him so much, he did not deserve to die at the hands of this crazy man! I sure hope the judge is not easy on him this time!!

  7. Dont give that horrible man any more of your life. Grieve as you can for your little lost fur baby, and try to heal. It isnt easy. Maybe donate to your local spca in bentleys name.

  8. Judge Joyce Hinrichs must not have read all the evidence regarding serial killers that rest of us have. A just punishment would be for that bastard to be locked in a room with the most vicious dogs possible. I can’t help but wonder if he would also push an unobserved stroller with a toddler into the bay! Does EPD know where he was on that horrific day? My condolences and prayers are with all of you who lost your beloved pets. Let us all remember this when Judge Hinrichs needs our vote to stay on the bench.

  9. I feel sorry for the dogs and those who loved them. But I always feel more than a little alarmed when people spout off about the retribution they’d like to see the convict face in prison.

Our society punishes people by locking them up. It’s Iran and similar countries that still use an-eye-for-an-eye.

To those who wonder how a serial killer could do what they do… it’s because they are serial killers. They are mentally ill or, if you prefer, crazy.

You deal with dangerous crazy people by locking them up and seeing if you can cure their illness. Only if you are a sadist yourself do you respond by putting them in a room with a pit bull, or by hoping they get raped in prison.

  10. As a Tea Party member I believe that our “system” of justice is faulty. America went wrong when we abandoned Biblical, “eye-for-an-eye” justice. Those who hurt others should be hurt back in the same way. There’s no problem if you keep your nose clean.

  11. Yes, “Tea Party.” And the New Testament is very ill-advised when it quotes some hippy (Matthew 5:39-41):

But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.

Your approach is much better, more in keeping with the spirit of the Koran.

  12. You asked why I let him live with me…This is why.
I was trying to help out a kid that I believed was a great person.. I believed his stories when he told me his parents were bad people and he has lived a horrible life and all he wants to do is be a good person, go to college and make something out of his life.. to prove to people that just because he had a bad up bringing he can over come it all and be this great person..All he needed was a place to stay untill his grant would come through for college and then he could get his own place. He seemed like a wonderful person and I was happy that he and my daughter were together.. I really believed that he loved her and would give the world to her if he could. I still believe he loves her.. she had him going to church and bible studys..helping him be the best man we thought he was. He told her when he met her he was going to make her fall inlove with him and thats just what he did!! He became the perfect person.. but things started happening..
and when I confronted him on what people were telling me he said it was true he used to do drugs.. and no he didnt kill a dog. He and his ex found the dog in a ditch after it had been hit by a car and later his ex told her parents that he did it because he wouldnt go back to her.. He made it very believable.. of course he was the victim as I soon found out he’s always the victim. He can really get into peoples heads and make them believe hes this great person.. We ended up finding heroin in my house.. my 10yr old daughter brought it to me.. I was furious.. This kid isnt just a sociopath hes also addicted to heroin. If it was just the drugs I think we would have tried to get him help and really try to help this kid but when Bentley ended up dead that was it.. I knew he did it! and at that point he was OUT of my house!

  13. “Tea Party”‘s beliefs are truly Biblical — Old Testament beliefs. It seems to me that many of the “Christian right” and evangelicals are what might be called “Old Testament Christians.” Yes, they take Jesus as their personal savior, but beyond that what really energizes them is what is written in the Old Testament, not the New.

  14. I just could not be heartbroken about the losses you poor people have suffered. I know some people are just so convincing. And I know there is no consolation at all in the fact that Bentleys death did put this sicko back in jail and hopefully prison. I am sick thinking your baby was not safe in his own home. What a price you have had to pay and its so unfair and I wish I could give him back to you. Only a soulless person could look in that beautiful innocent face and hurt him and ultimately take his life. I am so heartbroken over this and I never even met him. God bless you all for exposing him, there are no telling how many lives you have saved.

  15. Bentley’s Owner,

Your details make this terrible story even sadder. I’m no shrink, but I think one characteristic of sociopaths is an enormous persuasive ability. When the coincidences begin to build up, it’s time to say good-bye.

I’ve seen a sociopath work their way into a friend’s life and cause great destruction. It’s a horrible dynamic. I’m on a hair-trigger when it comes to BS, and that’s about all you can do to try to prevent a repeat. Sometimes you’ll push away people who you needn’t have.

You sound like a very kind person. It’s a shame you’ll need to be more wary in the future.

  16. Right on, Mitch. There’s a lot of mean spirits just itching to get out, as shown by the sadistic suggestions of retribution. And how convenient for a TeaBagger to check in with added ignorance. Talk about a package deal!

I love dogs so much it’s embarrassing, but advocating even MORE cruelty is regressive. It’s bad talk.

  17. Hinrichs is a typical Humboldt County judge who seem to think that animal abuse is just a minor crime. The local judges treat animal abusers as if it is a victimless crime. Well, I think these judges should be dethroned and SHOT. And this little scumbag Donovan should be beaten to death with a big stick. He better hope he is locked up for life, although I’d LOVE to meet him in a dark alley. Only one of us would leave alive.

It’s time this county treated animal abuse as the very serious, sadistic, sickening crime that it is. We need to get rid of these judges who don’t value animal life.

  18. Sorry Derral, but to allow this thing (I can’t call him human) to continue to exist is CRUELTY imposed on society. When will people admit that there are some “people” out there that don’t deserve to live, people whom society would be much better without.

We could do without most of the local judges, especially brain-dead Hinrichs, too.

  19. Heard through the grapevine that his girlfriend is skipping town today since he is “safe in jail” My question is, why are you stalking his girlfriend and threatening her kids? Was she involved too? Just wondered.

  20. You should go sit in Hinrichs court room some day. She constantly makes really stupid decisions….her child custody decisions should get HER locked up. I don’t know what criteria you people use to elect your judges but I think it’s time to take a closer look at them and the things they do on a regular basis.

  21. He is a sociopath.
His behaviors are linked to deep psychological problems.
This is where I believe the death penalty is appropriate.
For years I protested the death penalty, but now I just cant stand to watch human/animal suffering and these ***holes continue to live @ tax payer’s expenses, w/ meals, clothing, housing, health care….
    Nuke him now.

  22. Reading
about Sarah Lou, Bentley and the little chihuahua, just tore me up. As I’ve parented two Maltese girl dogs, it’s to my disbelief that anyone could be so cruel.
I ask why the neighbor who heard the dog screams didn’t act?

We who have dogs and puppies are so fortunate. I held my Annie (Maltese rescue) as close as could be last night and this morning, thinking that love (dog = God) is boundless from our little canines. No harm will come to some. That’s all we can hold onto.

For the owners of these little baby dogs, please know we feel your pain. No, not as you do. Try to heal when you give your love to another pup in memory of those who suffered.

The judge failed miserably. He should be disbarred. Those who have power often don’t belong in the seats they hold. SHAME ON THE JUDGE.
May that evil man be put into a room filled with Maltese and chihuahuas. The owners should be there with sticks in hand. He should be beaten.
An eye for en eye would stop all the abuses.

  23. I don’t think that anyone is evil enough to be subjected to “a room filled with Maltese and chihuahuas.”

  24. So, was this guy sent back to San Quentin, or what?
The victim’s boyfriend was sentenced to a year at San Quentin (for violating a restraining order) and was arrested that same day.
How will that be for both of them to be in the same prison group?
They are grouped by county there.

  25. Honeslty, I am not surprised how this young man turned out. His sociopathic tendencies, plays at religion and rehabilitation sound just like his father, who I have known for nearly 30 years. The one difference is I don’t think Dad killed animals…
So sad to be a waste of human space when so young.
Lesson to young women out there: if a young man is screwed up, you are not going to fix him with your love. It does not happen. Find yourself someone who is not a mess.

  26. The trial against Donavan Baltzley for animal cruelty and criminal threats is finally beginning later this week. I hope Northcoast Journal will be covering the trial.

  27. Donavan Baltzley entered a plea of guilty on three charges of animal cruelty today. Sentencing is on August 19th. He will be getting 5 years.

  28. He is due to be out soon.5 years = 18 months in our criminal justice system. Watch out for your Daughters and your little dogs.

  29. What is crazy is when i read these comments of how you would want someone dead, or the display of cruelty to punishment it makes me wonder what any human is capable of? It is not normal to have visions of doing something to someone that did the same thing your fantasizing about. When someone does something wrong it isnt your job to try to understand why? Be-grateful you don’t get it. We all are equipped to have something go wrong with our mental stability and decision making being compromised. But when i read these comments all I kept thing was “Wow, a whole bunch of weirdos” let me give an example of what maybe a normal comment to this horrible situation could look like.

My sympathy goes out to the families of these animals that had to suffer. That is most definitely a deep/hard loss to have to make sense of with no actual reasoning. To the young man found guilty of doing these things that i literally cant wrap my mind around, i hope he can find help in this time of incarceration to surface the bigger problem. I pray he is guided into a better path of life and overcome these life obstacles in my opinion could make a better more productive human being with something to offer. -Amen-
