Veteran staff writer Ryan Burns has been named acting editor of the North Coast Journal as of Wednesday, March 23. Burns has been with the Journal since 2008 and has won numerous writing awards for the paper.
Tom Abate, who served as editor for the past six weeks, is no longer with the company. His last day was Tuesday.
This article appears in dummy March 2011 (North Coast Journal).

That was fast!
Those responsible for sacking those who have just be sacked, have been sacked…
Woah! You change editors faster than the HSU Lumberjack. Where did Abbott go?
oops. I mean Abate. But then again, who’s gonna care how his name was spelled six months from now. Good luck Ryan.
Abate was more unstable that Rose Welsh!
I didn’t think that was possible!

One of the funniest comments I have read in a very long time.
Congrats Ryan, I am glad it is you!
I like Ryan’s writing a lot and he’s a very nice guy also. Congrats!!
YAY!! Now you need to make amends with Hank.
Good luck, Ryan! Not that you’ll need it.
I’m pretty sure my jerk comment about Tom being a jerk is what did it.
I knew my hypocrisy would pay off someday!
It’s great that the job is safely back in the hands of another hat-wearing man. Congratulations Ryan.
I wonder if Judy has so little to say because she has a mouth full of crow. Glad to see Abate go and looking forward to seeing the NCJ crawl out from underneath the mess. Good luck Ryan!
Now let Heidi, the best reporter you have by far, do the legitimate investigative reporting she is capable of doing most excellently, before there is no reason to read the NCJ at all besides the upcoming events and music reviews.
Class and talent once again reign at the NCJ. Hooray! Congrats — and good luck — Burns.
I keep wanting to push a “like” button, especially on the comment about Heidi. Now let’s bring back Savage Money!
Hank liked incendiary. Abate liked self-defense and safe. Let’s get back to the NCJ that broke big stories and gave us smart ideas.
Congratulations, Mr. Burns. We wish you the best for the future.
The Journal clearly declined in the few short weeks with Abate at the helm. Though it will never, ever make up for the stupidity of demoting this county’s best journalist, this at least makes me think the out-bleeding at the paper may have been “Abated.” Now, bring back HANK! In any case, Burns is a sharp guy who will certainly uphold the NCJ to its former glorious standards and intelligence. I feel like the hooks have been removed from my back, and I may now once again pick up the NCJ without groaning.
You know who needs to be thankful for all of this drama don’t you? Dell’Arte!!!! Their next opera just fell into their laps…
@Steven Streufert: Thanks for hanging in there.
Congratulations, Ryan! The Journal needed some help to get steady again.
Abate’s writing was less imaginative/creative/interesting/captivating/thought provoking/insightful/enlightening to me than I had enjoyed about the journal in the past. I am looking forward to more pre-Abate type writing and stories. Nonetheless, I hope Tom is going to be okay. He seemed to care about some important issues in Humboldt County.
Outstanding choice. (Actually, two of them. Burns up, Abate down.)
Great comments…
Epecially:
“Hank liked incendiary. Abate liked self-defense and safe. Let’s get back to the NCJ that broke big stories and gave us smart ideas.”
I hope the Journal decides to move forward. Hank was a little too sensational, I didn’t really have time to form an opinion on Abate, I really liked the editor before Hank (I forget his name at the moment).
I would like to see the Journal become community oriented again, publish articles that are truthful, relevant, important, entertaining, supportive of the arts, and informative.
Even the great George Steinbrenner didn’t go through managers like this. Watch your back Ryan Burns!
Show ’em what you have Ryan, and perhaps you’ll become the permanent editor.
There’s nothing like good local experience and a righteous track record.
Best wishes
This town carries a whole lot of back story and it takes someone who has been here a long time to understand beyond and below the quaint tip of the iceberg.
Abatistas of the world, unite!
Congratulations, Ryan! 🙂 Thank you NCJ for promoting a fabulous journalist, and best of luck to Tom Abate in his future endeavors.
In a few short weeks, Abate nearly destroyed your paper; it became weak and flaccid. Good move getting rid of him. Looking forward to a resurgence in strength of the NCJ.
Judy writes “…we had one person on the editorial staff off on vacation, another at the dentist, another one on deadline for this week’s cover story, and our ace HSU intern on spring break.” Does this sound like adequate staffing is an issue at NCJ?
Uh oh. Is this new Burns guy going to demand funnier cartoons?
He told me he likes Family Circus, Joel. Bad sign.
I was thinking of consolidating to eliminate redundancies. How do you guys feel about “Wabash Willie o’ Heaven”?
I’ll ask Will.
I want my Hanky back.
Andrew, don’t be dissing on Family Circus, it’s adorable! NCJ cartoons contribute to the decline of western values.
Congratulations, Ryan. It is good to see you recognized for your work.
Did Abatty leave town, or just the Journal? Perhaps he’ll apply for John Driscoll’s job at the T-S.
Miss Hank. Like Burns. Good decision Judy.
