Dennis Hunter won’t be running for re-election to the Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District, leaving his Eureka-based seat up for grabs in the Nov. 3 election.
“I promised my constituents I would finish out the term,” Hunter told the Journal by phone Tuesday evening. “I think it’s time to do other things.”
Former mill employee Richard Marks likely will run for the vacant seat. He recently told the Journal that his decision would largely be based on whether or not Hunter chose to seek re-election. Environmental advocate, naturalist and former NEC employee Susan Penn has also signed papers with the county to run, according to Hunter, who declined to offer an endorsement of either candidate.
By November, Hunter will have served 20 years with the district. “I’ve done my time,” he said. “I hope some of it’s been positive. I’ll just leave it at that.”

Dennis is a good man who serves his community with honor. His work with Easter Seals, service on nonprofit boards of directors and general philanthropy alone are worthy of note.
