Six first-place, two second-place awards — the latter only in categories where we were competing against ourselves. We beat the San Francisco Business Times in business reporting. Our production team got first place for layout and design, and that was in a category without circulation classes. In other words, this year we are officially the BEST-DESIGNED WEEKLY TABLOID NEWSPAPER IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA.
Best writing. Best local news reporting. Best features. Best investigative stories. The North Coast Journal has it all, baby! It’s like we’ve been trying to tell you! Click through to the CNPA .pdf for the full rundown.
Oh, and congrats to the Times-Standard for taking home two second-place awards (*cough*).
UPDATE: Whoops, I overlooked The Eureka Reporter because CNPA had filed them under “T.” But, yes: Four first-placers for the ER crew — Public Service, Sports, Design and Special Issue. The T-S‘s were in breaking news and local news coverage.
This article appears in Don’t Toss the Coin.

You got to ask them to turn their heads when they cough, Mr. Sims. Damn, the blognaughts have got it wrong, even without Siemen you seem to carry your own and then some. Pros in Humboldt? get the fuct outta here!
Congratulations!
Well done!
There were, at my count, a total of ten 1st place awards for layout and design in 204 newspapers judged. Almost 5% of the entries got a first place in layout and design.
But only one WEEKLY TABLOID!
It means that we beat, for example, the Bay Guardian, the Sacto News & Review, the SF Business Times, etc., etc.
Pretty boss!
true, and two of them in Humboldt. I think its kinda enlightening re: ER performance in regards to T-S and your recent article about outsourced/canned news at T-S being the wave…
True — they must be feeling pretty spry over on Fourth Street today!
T-S partisans, though, will sneer that their team’s honors were in the “serious reporting” categories.
Interesting story in that link there, about a cell tower.
I saw that, but I haven’t read it yet.
One thing to know about the CNPA, Cap: It’s basically a front organization for commie anti-cell-phone activists. No on 8!
Congrats Hank, even though you failed to mention that your San Francisco rival took home an award for general excellence, and you evidently did not. Whassup wit dat?
Funny story, actually!
We didn’t submit an entry in the “general excellence” category. Why not?
Well, because they tell you which issues to submit. This time it was three consecutive weeks in October. And so no matter how we arranged it, we couldn’t avoid sending the infamous Oct. 18 issue.
Hey, we loved Oct. 18 all the way around — from the cover to the NORML meta-coverage. But we knew that in no way would it be CNPA’s cup of tea.
Congratulations. Lacking sufficient wall space, the NCJ will have to start hanging awards in the restroom.
ooh, i like the restroom decor idea! but don’t cover over the beautiful rock hole in the wall with your new award plaques, Hank. Congrats to y’all!
Congratulations to Hank, Heidi and everyone at the NCJ! You truly deserve it.
I can’t believe the ER got a first place award for public dis-service. Maybe they got the award for being a handy wipe or fire stove starter.
You certainly didn’t “kill” when it came to covering the smaller citys’ on the northcoast council elections.
Last weekend the NCJ said they did not have enough time to do articles on any other council races within Humboldt County. There are elections in Fortuna, Rio Dell, Ferndale, and Blue Lake to name a few, yet the Journal “didnt have time”.
There are major issues, especially in Fortuna, with our general plan update, and a controversial shopping center planned – yet the Journal “didnt have time”.
The Journal also devoted time to fringe party presidential candidates, yet they “didnt have time” to cover the other NORTH COAST cities.
This Swing State piece was a piece that wouldve been fine to run after the election. Perhaps that wouldve given them time to run pieces on the smaller NORTHCOAST cities.
Shame on you NCJ, you dropped the ball. Again.
probably why they didn’t get the public service award.
