Is this story really saying that Caltrans is going to go after Prop. 1B funding for improvements to Highway 36? To Highway freakin’ 36?
I think it is saying that.
Prop. 1B, you’ll remember, was a state bond measure designed to alleviate traffic congestion on highly impacted transportation corridors. And so it seems that some Caltrans folks and some others over in Lassen County have decided that the jampacked Arcata-Reno run via good ol’ 36 fits the bill perfectly:
He [Lassen County Transportation Committee Chairman Jim Chapman] said as the corridor will become a viable alternative that will grow for years to come to serve not only the north state’s economic needs, but security needs and the economic needs of this country.
Security needs and economic needs of this country. Mein Gott. They have no shame.

Highway 299 is slow with too many curves. It’s car sick central.
That leaves us SR 20 to connect with I-5, which is fine, but if an improved Highway 36 gets me to I-5 faster, I’ll take it every time.
It looks like cutting east at 36 would avoid a couple hours drive on 101, and that’s good in my book. It all comes down to how much they improve 36.
ha, ha, ha, ha, Give me a break. The county roads are falling apart whereas 36 is continually repaved. Maybe you all didn’t know (or care), but 36 is considered one of the finest motorcycle roads in the nation. Folks come from all over just to ride it. And, the Mad River Burger Bar is our Ace Cafe.
Really? How do they negotiate all that traffic?
the only section of Hwy 299 that is twisty is the buckthorn summit grade….the rest of the ride between arcata and redding is along the river or heading up lord ellis and berry summits…..
Thank you for admitting that 299 is “twisty.”
Actually, 36 is great and a super alternative to get to hiway 5 especially for all who live south of Eureka. Makes sense and it will take a lot of traffic off of 299
You are right 36 is a great MC road. We have led groups over it for years and ride the loop over 36,3,299 quite a bit in the summer.
Having worked in Trinity County before South Fork was re-done, I can say I think that was a good idea. That single lane stretch of road was very dangerous…kind of like going from Hayfork to Hyampom.
Of course if they fix the road too much, all of the drug trafficers and fleeing felons will have to find another route because there will be more CHP presence for all of the traffic.
yo, not everyone lives in Arcata. Down south of the bay area we take 36 to the valley because it is faster than driving 30-40 minutes north to 299. Also, 36 has been designated a the route to ship nuclear rods from Humboldt Bay power plant to Nevada repository because of low population. making it two lanes to Mad River will save a few lives too.
As the county grows, I know thats againsts everyones wish but forced sterilization is illegal last time I checked, is better to be pro-active in planning than to play catch up.
