Keep KHSU alternative, independent

Thanks for your article regarding the recent situation at KHSU. (“Station Identification,” July 31). While there are many disturbing aspects, the most disturbing is that a mid-level bureaucrat and the university president are wanting to make program and other policy for the community-sponsored station.
The whole reason we have “alternative, independent” radio is so that we receive information that we don’t normally get on commercial stations, and with input from the community that supports it. If Gunsalus and others are sickened by a “winter soldier” account on Democracy Now!, or thinks that Thursday Night Talk is one-sided, they can propose other programming that reflects their views.
To, instead, suggest striking these programs from the KHSU roster is antithetical to what public broadcasting is all about and exactly what we are experiencing in the mainstream media … the party line. That is not what we, the community that showed up at the CAG meeting, for the most part, want.
I was heartened by the turnout at the CAG meeting and hearing about the large community response to this situation. We need more responses like this for local and national concerns. We want a say regarding important issues that affect our lives, not more corporate media. I think that is what democracy is all about.
