Wedged in the landing craft,
they gazed, awestruck,
as wave upon wave of aircraft
thundered toward France.
"There were so many
you could scarcely see the sky,"
my friend's father said,
recalling
that long-ago Day-of-days;
and, strangely,
that's what comes to mind,
standing at the Arcata Marsh
staring heavenward
as first one ragged vee
of Aleutian geese
and then another, and then another
streams overhead.
