The Humboldt Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) recently awarded notebook computers to two graduates of Continuing Education Schools in Humboldt County. Selected by their teachers for their outstanding high school performance and interest in continuing their education, these students have achieved success despite life challenges that took them off the typical path and into continuation programs.
AAUW-Humboldt has been offering an annual award to one or two outstanding female high school students for over 40 years. The emphasis on students from Continuation High School programs started several years ago. The 2026 winners are Katlynn Finch and Leila Ruth Baird.

Katlynn Finch is a graduating senior from East High School. She will attend College of the Redwoods in the fall, studying psychology, marine biology, and possibly drama. Katlynn enjoys the creative work of drawing, sewing, and beading. She is drawn to online games by the stories they tell that have inspired her and she believes that her college studies will expand her creative abilities.
Leila Ruth Baird starts her studies toward becoming a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) at College of the Redwoods this fall. She has already completed CNA and EMT training, and is experienced at navigating the medical system based on both personal and family illnesses. Leila is described as a focused and diligent student who will bring hard-won wisdom to her studies and profound empathy to her future patients. Her perseverance and compassion ensure she will be an asset to the healthcare community. Having waited to further her education until her children were grown, Leila is proving that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams.
AAUW-Humboldt’s mission is to advance gender equity through research, education, and advocacy. In addition to this award to outstanding continuing education high school students, the branch provides scholarships to women re-entering Cal Poly-Humboldt as upper division or graduate students, supports local girls’ attendance at Tech Trek (a summer science and math camp for girls who will enter eighth grade in the fall), and community action projects. It also hosts monthly meetings to promote community engagement. For more information, see https://humboldt-ca.aauw.net/.
