StartUp Humboldt has selected 24 semifinalists from an impressive pool of 108 applicants to advance to the education and mentorship phase of this year’s inaugural Competition. The program culminates on April 23 at the Eureka Theater, where a smaller group of finalists will pitch their ventures for access to up to $200,000 in milestone-based funding.

Designed to support both scalable enterprises and microventures, the competition strengthens the regional economy by equipping founders with the tools to build durable, revenue-generating companies. The 2026 semifinalist cohort underscores the breadth of innovation taking root across the North Coast. A sampling of the selected ventures includes:

  • A mass timber manufacturer producing low-carbon building materials
  • An LGBTQ2S+-focused mental health collective expanding affirming care while training and employing local clinicians
  • A cooperative launching Humboldt’s first local masa production facility rooted in Indigenous food systems
  • Solar-powered pavement lighting systems reducing grid dependence for public walkways and shared spaces
  • A Tribal-led marine foods enterprise growing sustainable aquaculture and local employment
  • Wildfire mitigation and forest health companies expanding prevention and vegetation management work
  • Smart power line monitoring systems that help prevent wildfires and improve reliability
  • A seaweed farming and processing company scaling regenerative ocean agriculture
  • A next-generation inflatable rescue craft built on patent-protected structural technology
  • Sealed fermentation systems converting food scraps into nutrient-rich soil products
  • A pasture-to-pint, lactose-free ice cream producer scaling operations
  • Premium California redwood board racks manufactured locally for national markets
  • Architectural lighting systems combining local fabrication with intelligent software

Collectively, the cohort of semifinalists represents businesses at multiple stages, from pilot-phase innovators to existing companies preparing for expansion. Many project substantial workforce growth within five years, with several anticipating dozens, and in some cases hundreds, of new skilled positions.

Throughout this phase, semifinalists participate in expert-led coursework delivered by faculty and industry professionals from Cal Poly Humboldt and College of the Redwoods. Instruction covers financial modeling, market validation, operational systems, scaling strategy, and investor readiness. Each company also receives individualized, one-on-one mentorship through the North Coast Small Business Development Center, ensuring tailored guidance aligned with the venture’s size, structure and goals.

Regardless of whether a semifinalist moves forward to compete for access to the milestone-based funding, every participant leaves with a stronger entrepreneurial foundation and a clearer pathway toward launching or scaling their business. The program is designed not only to identify winners, but to build resilient companies that retain talent, attract investment, and keep economic value rooted locally.

“We were deeply impressed by both the volume and caliber of applications submitted,” said Samantha Edwardes, Program Coordinator for the StartUp Humboldt Competition. “These founders are not waiting for the future — they are building it. It takes real courage to launch a venture, and this cohort is stepping forward to shape the direction of our regional economy. They are creating companies that generate high-quality jobs while honoring the values and needs of this community.”

The free public pitch event will take place on Thursday, April 23 at the historic Eureka Theater, where selected finalists will present before judges and a community audience for access to up to $200,000 in milestone-based funding. As a celebration of innovation, community members, investors, and business leaders are encouraged to attend and rally around the founders driving the next chapter of regional growth.
