Humboldt County and the greater Emerald Triangle are well known throughout the world as a cannabis destination and the historic center of American cannabis production. But for much of that local history, cannabis was identified by consumers as one product: cannabis flower that could be smoked in bongs, pipes and joints.
Historically and globally, that wasnโt always the case, especially before the advent of higher potency strains that made smoking flower by itself far more pleasurable. Native and wild-growing cannabis from places like the high Himalayas had far less potency per puff than modern renditions.
The main reason for this improvement is the concentration of trichomes on cannabis flower. Tiny hair-like appendages, cannabis trichomes are the main source of THC and CBD from the plant. Some might recognize non-infused cannabis flower with a โfrostierโ appearance as being more potent โ those specks of white are concentrations of trichomes.

For early users of cannabis thousands of years ago, collecting trichomes and the resulting plant resin became a key step in producing potent, smokable product. This led to the creation of hash, with written mentions of the concentrate dating to Wahshiyyaโs Book of Poisons from 10th century Persia and perhaps even further back. One of the earliest production methods involved using wooden sieves to separate cannabis trichomes and resin from less-psychoactive plant material.
Hash is a category that can describe a variety of products, but at its core is collecting and consolidating trichomes to up the potency and purity of the smoke, and to better age, preserve and manipulate various forms of THC and CBD. Modern manufacturing processes have led to cleaner and higher-potency forms of hash than the original darkly colored โbricksโ that many older stoners in the U.S. know from locales like Afghanistan and Morocco.
Chief among these new-age forms of hash is hash rosin, a further concentrated cannabis product that, in its purest form, is made only from melted plant resin within the head of the trichome itself. The most popular method is ice-water hash production, where trichomes are separated from other plant material via a combination of ice, water, fresh-frozen cannabis flower and filter bags.

The resulting trichomes are then melted and pressed using a combination of pressure and heat. Freshly pressed product can be smoked immediately, but most producers opt to cure their rosin, which makes it easier to handle and transport while arguably increasing the complexity of its flavor profile.
Itโs after manufacturing that cannabis rosin tends to get lost in the shuffle of products found in Californiaโs vast dispensary system. Consumers are often confronted with an overwhelming variety of product types just within the concentrate category, as well as questions and confusion over how and why they might enjoy smoke concentrates at home.
Nabeel Al-Aziz of Humboldt County-based Nasha Hash says not knowing how to use hash/rosin products can be a barrier to exploring them. โUnlike flower, you canโt just put it in any bowl or roll it into any pre-roll. You often need โflowerโ as the base [for hash or rosin in] pre-rolls or bowls, or a dedicated dab device for rosin.โ
Dabbing is a method of vaporizing cannabis concentrates, including hash rosin, to smoke directly. This can be accomplished by using a butane torch with a banger to hold the concentrate and water pipe, or with a dedicated electronic rig or โe-rig.โ
Also confusing to some consumers are the differences between common concentrate categories found at dispensaries, where rosin is typically higher priced than other products. Consumers often hear โlive resinโ and distillate products compared to rosin, when unlike rosin, these products are not a naturally derived byproduct of the cannabis plant.
โLive resinโ concentrate is primarily created through a process where butane is used as a solvent to extract cannabis oils, also known as butane hash oil or BHO. While distillate also uses solvents (typically ethanol) for extraction, its production fully separates out all psychoactive and flavor compounds of the cannabis plant. This allows producers to more easily flavor products and decide THC levels themselves, including flavoring with botanically derived terpenes to lower costs.
By comparison, creating rosin is more akin to fine winemaking than an industrial manufacturing process. The end result of outdoor-grown hash rosin is a direct reflection of the growing season and properties inherent to a given strain of cannabis. Carefully separated trichomes are the โgrapesโ of this process โ separated, carefully pressed and then aged/cured into a pure consumable expression of the plant, the place it was grown and its maker.
Consumers also need to look out for quality differences within the rosin category itself, especially between different brands. Jacob Stockwell, founder of the cannabis brand Have Hash, says there are red flags to look out for: โBrands that donโt disclose their source material or farms, overly โperfectโ marketing with no transparency, products that prioritize yield over flavor and experience, and inconsistent batches.โ Cannabis rosin with additional added terpenes (including botanical ones) and other adulterants have appeared in the marketplace, too.
Like any craft product category, the best bet for enjoying cannabis rosin is to stick with producers dedicated to quality over quantity. While it may take some time to figure out the true artisans from knock-offs, the journey can be worthwhile. At its finest, hash rosin is a true concentrated and naturally derived representation of the best qualities of cannabis.
