A Memory Café is a fun, welcoming gathering for people experiencing memory loss and those who care about them — caregivers, family members and friends.  These informal get-togethers are a place to relax, connect with others who have shared life experiences and challenges, and enjoy companionship in a comfortable, casual atmosphere.

The Humboldt Senior Resource Center (HSRC) Alzheimer’s Services and Activities programs will be launching Memory Café’s at HSRC sites in Eureka and Fortuna.  Anyone experiencing memory loss due to any condition is welcome to participate.  This includes memory loss due to dementia, Alzheimer’s, or other brain conditions that can cause challenges with thinking, memory or behavior.

At a Memory Café gathering, participants enjoy friendly conversation and social time.  A facilitator will lead simple enjoyable activities such as music, games, art or storytelling.  The goal of these activities is to help encourage engagement, cognitive stimulation and shared experiences in a supportive, judgement-free space.

There are numerous benefits to taking part in a Memory Café. It’s an opportunity to meet others who “get” the challenges of coping with a memory-related condition, which in turn helps participants feel more connected and less alone in a “community” of like individuals. The meaningful moments shared at these gatherings provide a break from participants’ day-to-day routines.

HSRC will host two memory Cafés each month starting in June:

  • The HSRC Fortuna Memory Café will be held on the first Friday of each month starting June 5 from 1:30-3 p.m. at the Heritage Café in the Gene Lucas Community Center, 3000 Newburg Road.
  • The HSRC Eureka Memory Café will be held on the third Friday of each month starting June 19 from 1:30-3 p.m. at the Heritage Café, 1910 California Street.

There is no cost to attend, nor is any formal diagnosis, paperwork or referral required. All abilities are welcome and are encouraged to come as “as you are.” Light refreshments will be served.

Reservations are recommended. To RSVP or for more information, call HSRC at (707) 443-9747 or email info@humsenior.org.
