Editor:
There is no doubt about it, we are living through an emergency. No more time for blame and punishment; we need to move into rescue mode. Emergencies call upon us to bring forth all our courage to deal with them. We can’t ignore them — lest all we hold dear perish.
Fortunately there are noble people standing by to help in emergencies — when we call upon them. One of them is Dr. Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate for president.
If you were one of the 328 people crowded into HSU’s Kate Buchanan Room on Sept.24 to hear her speak, you know that you were in the presence of a rescuer. Truth is unmistakable when it finally reaches us. I refer to an excellent article in the North Coast Journal (“Imagine All the Voters,” Sept. 27) for the gist of Jill Stein’s rescue plan and the atmosphere her words evoke.
We are going to have to get radical now folks. We must vote Green. The others have been taking us places we don’t really want to go. And blatantly lying to us — history tells us so.
Today I learned that the Green Party is guided by 10 key values. Look them up; they will make your heart soar. One of them is nonviolence; another social justice and equal opportunity. If all our laws and policies were written with these values in mind — and we behaved accordingly — we wouldn’t be going through this emergency.
Since we are and we know it, we must help in any way we can. No more voting for people with so little conscience. And if they do get into positions of authority, no more obedience to that authority.
This is an emergency.

Unfortunately, if you were not in that room, nor read the local coverage of her presentation….you’ll have to wait until the next election before you’ll see any relevant coverage of issues that should, indeed, have us all in “emergency mode”.
The other half of eligible U.S. voters might start to register if they new how many foreclosures and illness-related bankruptcies their were in their neighborhood each week…they might like to know that every measurable category of the environment, society and the economy remain in free-fall…except for the predator industries that saturate our communities.
It’s the “jobs and growth” the politicians have been promising us!
Excellent letter, Maureen. Listening to Jill Stein was like a breath of fresh air. She moved from issue to issue in a clear and substantive manner saying this is the issue, this is what “they” propose doing, here is what I will do and here is why. Clear as a bell, no beating around the bush, no BS. Radically different than the crap we hear from O and R.
I will vote for her. People are afraid to vote for her because they fear Romney getting elected but here, in California, Obama has a sure thing and every vote for Dr. Stein sends a critical message to Obama. I want Obama to hear that message loud and clear.
