“This is the area that State Parks intends to narrow by nearly half and install a two-foot wide bike lane and a horse trail alongside the remaining asphalt,” said Driscoll in an email following the action.
According to the equestrians, there’s a perfectly good horse trail they’ve already been using, and would like to keep using; they don’t want the new trail the state proposes to build — so why spend scarce state money on it?
Driscoll says they invited State Parks officials to come to the action and accept their petition with about 200 signatures, but received no response.
The trail project is part of a long-term native dune habitat restoration project in the area.

“We the undersigned are asking California State Parks to add equestrian designation to the proposed pedestrian trails at the Little River State Beach project site. These existing trails have been acknowledged to have shared use for decades and there has been no data presented to justify the elimination of such historic use.

We have been working to get State Parks to respond to the concerns of a vital part of our community. They seem to be more interested in calling an area they ripped up with excavators and bulldozers then suddenly dont have the money to replant a”restoration” project Meanwhile they want to spend this money they dont have on a project we dont need or want. Now State Parks wants to do this trail treatment – tearing up part of an existing road to put in a horse and bike trail.
This new trail treatment isn’t necessary and the funds should be reallocated to plant native plants where the dunes were mowed down. Doing so would create some habitat to protect the freshwater wetlands and give the snowy plover suitable nesting areas.
All kinds of beach lovers have been using the existing trails for decades. Horse people have a great relationship with State Parks but for some reason they are going rouge at Little River. The equestrian community has been stonewalled from a public process that is not so public. We should all be concerned about this lack of process and transparency.

Your answer is exactly what we are requesting – let us use the trails just as we have been doing for decades. Our understanding is that the proposed changes will not allow us access to those trails, and place horses up next to the paved road & along a bike trail. We have also recently found out (through other groups-not horse people) that the frontage road would be significantly narrowed. Even bicyclists, who have no problem cruising along the frontage road now, are shaking their heads at what is being proposed. All of this information is being sleuthed out by people who are very concerned about this project. State Parks is not being very forthcoming on this. Thank you all for your interest, and keep your eyes open. This project could start very soon. We just want a public meeting so that we can understand what State Parks is planning and have them hear our concerns.

I’m one of many of the “elder” horse people that have been using the existing Little River Trail for decades. I ride up the beach to the Little River and then cut over to the Trail and head back to the campground. It’s a beautiful trail and has hardly changed in the 30 plus years I have used it. I will continue to hold my ground on that trail that was in existence decades before and did not cost the parks a dime to build.
p.s. I know that Uri regularly attends a local Trails Coalition meeting along with Cyclists, hikers and equestrians where they regularly discuss all trail issues in Humboldt County. He is there for all of us that get out and hike, bike and ride.
