Eureka Stirs

Nearly 100 Eureka residents filled the basement of the Eureka Veteran’s Hall Monday night for a community forum scheduled to discuss the firing of former Eureka Police Chief Garr Nielsen.

While praise for the changes witnessed under Garr’s tenure made up a significant portion of the sentiment, displeasure with the power wielded by City Manager David Tyson quickly became the theme of the night.

The following are — shaky — video highlights from that meeting featuring resident Sylvia Scott, Eureka City Councilmember Linda Atkins, former Eureka Mayor Peter LaVallee and former Eureka City Councilmember Larry Glass. If you get motion sickness, you might want to wait ‘til Ryan Burns breaks it down in print in tomorrow’s NCJ.

Nah, watch this.

Yes, blogosphere. Larry Glass “called out” county supervisor Virginia Bass’s husband Matthew Owen. If that’s all you want to see, scroll south. Have fun, kids.

Hey Linda how much will it cost the city to fire Tyson?

How much will it cost the city to keep him?

Eureka yawns

It was the same old angry left-wing nuts.

Any wonder why the Regressives never get anything done in this town?

Since Linda Atkins is so ”ashamed to be a part of the city of Eureka” and she “waste time Tuesday nights at city council meetings”, maybe she can resign and move to Arcata.

Wow, that’s a lotta ugly in that room. And I ain’t talking about the mood. It is unfortunate that government agencies are bound by personnel rules from discussing “personnel matters” because, as in this case, there are a lot of hysterical, overreacting, very uninformed people out there right now. Like the no-longer-relevant Glass and downright scary Atkins. As facts leak out there will be back-tracking and rear-end covering. Cue Emily Litella.

Frank, it’s obvious you aren’t even living in the same universe as the rest of us here. I live in Eureka, and since Garr was installed, my family has finally started feeling safe in our own neighborhood. Shame on Tyson, and shame on you for supporting his childish vendetta. He’s the one who will end up costing this city, in human lives lost.

Everybody I talk to was happy with the changes that Garr Nielsen ushered in.

A Eureka Police officer shot a reportedly armed man in an alley off Summer Street at around 11 a.m. Thursday after a resident wrestled the man to the ground.

Humboldt County Coroner Dave Parris identified the man who was shot as David Sequoia, 25, of Eureka, and said that he was pronounced dead shortly after he was taken to the hospital. Eureka Police Chief Garr Nielsen confirmed that the shooting involved two officers with his department, but released few details about the incident.

On Thursday, Summer Street resident Kris Coon said he heard rustling in the carport of his home, and found a white man in his early 20s carrying a backpack. Coon said the man pushed him, and Coon wrestled him to the ground, then realized the man had a handgun in his belt. His wife had called 911, and police arrived quickly, Coon said.

The man refused to comply with officers’ orders to give up the gun, Coon said, and an officer shot the man in the head.

WILL ROGERS- I won’t post the whole article, but I guess you can figure it out. POLICE CHIEF GARR NIELSEN. Selective memory much?
