With Marsee out, the CR Board needed a place holder. They acted fast.

CR Trustees accept CR President Marsee’s resignation;
appoint Dr. Utpal Goswami acting president starting March 2College of the Redwoods’ Board of Trustees accepted CR President Jeff Marsee’s resignation on Tuesday, March 1 and appointed CR Vice President of Instruction Dr. Utpal Goswami as acting president.
Both actions were unanimous 9-0 decisions, voted on during closed session by the Trustees.
Goswami, who has been CR’s vice president of instruction since July 1, 2010, will assume his new duties on Wednesday, March 2. Marsee, who has been CR’s president since July 1, 2008, will be available as a consultant to the college through April 30, 2011. He takes over as the president of San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, Calif., on May 1, 2011.
Before he came to CR, Goswami served for four years as the vice president and provost of academic affairs for Yavapai College in Prescott, Az. Yavapai College serves more than 20,000 students.
“I view CR as an important element of this community,” Goswami said. “My goal at CR is to have the college live up to the expectations of providing great service to the community.”
Goswami has been leading CR in the college’s efforts in jump-starting its accreditation self-study report efforts in preparation for the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior College’s re-accreditation visit this fall. He has also helped the college in addressing governance issues and, as co-chair of the CR Budget Planning Committee, is developing strategies and options to address emerging fiscal challenges bought on by the state budget deficit.
Prior to Yavapai College, Goswami served as the dean of business administration and instructional operations at St. Louis Community College-Meramec for almost five years. He also has 20 years teaching experience having been a tenured professor of economics and business administration at Schreiner University for 14 years and four years as an assistant professor of economics at Trinity University.
Goswami said his primary goal is service to students.
“It is my belief that institutions of learning should focus on serving students and student success,” Goswami said. “My priority over the years is developing programs and initiatives for a wide and diversified spectrum of student needs emphasizing close collaboration of instructional and student services personnel.”

This man is much more than a place holder. He’s the best VP CR has seen in at least 10 years. He has the potential to be one of CR’s best presidents. Good move by the Board of Trustees. It’s about time.
Utpal Goswami is an excellent administrator. Finally, FINALLY we’ll have some real leadership at CR.
He has not been at CR very long though. But so far, he does seem like one of the best VPs in a long time. I think CR has been mighty lucky to have had Dr. Snow-Flamer, too, to help keep it afloat during the recent turmoils. I would not have been surprised at all if the Board of Trustees had selected him instead.
