UPDATE:
We’re getting reports that the 6.2 earthquake that rattled Humboldt County at about 12:15 p.m. today shattered the windows of a number of businesses in Rio Dell and Ferndale.

The USGS, meanwhile, reports there have been a string of aftershocks in the temblor’s wake, including a 3.0 around 12:40 p.m. and a 3.6 at around 12:50 p.m.

PREVIOUSLY:
Humboldt County just got a jolt for the holidays, with a 6.2 earthquake hitting off the coast of Petrolia at about 12:15 p.m. There is no threat of a tsunami from the quake, reports the Redwood Coast Tsunami Working Group.

According to a preliminary USGS map, the temblor’s shaking was felt throughout Ferndale, Fortuna and Eureka.  The quake’s epicenter was about 23 miles west of Petrolia along the triple junction at a depth of about 5 miles.

Did you feel it? Any damage? Let us know your experience.

  1. McCullens Ave in Eureka. Definitely felt it. Couple of jolts and rolling. Maybe 10 seconds? Hard to tell. Cats freaked out. No damage that I can tell.

  2. Hi! Willow Creek here
Shook this old house Rattled the windows
The dogs were looking at me like
    “Are we gonna die?”
    And I said
    NOT TODAY!!!!
And kept on trimming because I couldn’t afford to hire anyone to trim for me this year

  3. I was driving on S HWY 101 just south of Rio Dell. I was thinking that the sky was looking ominous as I drove across the bridge when the concrete started rippling and waving. At first, I thought “Oh s**t, it’s a tornado because I had been thinking about the weather and the wind was up. But I quickly realized the bridge was heaving with an earthquake. Then my cell began an emergency alert shrieking and I jammed on the gas to get off of that bridge! I swear I thought my life was ending right then. I took the next off ramp and read my phone which advised me to drop hold and take cover. How the heck do you do that in a car? With redwoods all around.

  4. This is just the start…
You can’t expect billions of tons of glacier-melt on top of the Cascadia subduction zone to have no impact.
Yep, another climate change issue for the volunteer oil lobby deniers…
