I suppose this is what you end up with when you rename an airport by committee — an unwieldy 13-syllable Franken-name that no one will ever use in conversation. Ever.

Today the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors voted five-zip to change the name of the Arcata-Eureka Airport to (deep breath) “California Redwood Coast — Humboldt County Airport.” What, no mention of oysters? Can’t we fit the Kinetic Sculpture Race in there? And Bigfoot! Where is Bigfoot?!

The top vote-getter on a list of suggestions compiled by county staff was the much more elegant “Humboldt Redwoods Regional Airport.” But instead the board went with a suggestion offered by the 15-syllable Humboldt County Aviation Advisory Committee.

On the bright side, the new name will give people something to read while waiting for delayed flights.

  1. Will the airport designator change from ACV to CRC-HCA –And what does CV stand for?

  2. no wonder it’s hard to get other airlines to sign up for ACV, they’d have to create whole new announcement boards for us–The Little Airport with the Big Name…

  3. Thankfully, the airport will retain its ACV designation. The name change was done, supposedly, so that our airport would show up in more searches, but I doubt that this will be useful to search engines, nor to users.

  4. As if I didn’t have a problem already, explaining to people flying this way from the Midwest, yes it’s Arcata airport in Mckenleyville.

  5. In response to Marnie, the Airport Code ACV will stay the same. As for the origin of the code, I’ll take a stab at it. The airport was opened as a Naval Auxillary Air Station Arcata. Part of McKinleyville was once known as “Calville”, so I’ll guess the code stands for Arcata-CalVille.

  6. Will a rose by any other name still smell as sweet????Raging Granny of Humboldt—
