CAL FIRE Fire Captain Brook Hoalton of the Humboldt–Del Norte Unit, has been named California’s EMS Educator of the Year, recognizing her leadership, dedication, and decades-long contributions to Emergency Medical Services education.
As EMS Coordinator for the Humboldt–Del Norte Unit, Captain Hoalton oversees the training and clinical readiness of over 400 personnel in one of California’s most remote and rugged regions. Her work ensures firefighters and emergency responders are prepared to provide the highest level of prehospital care despite extended transport times and limited infrastructure.
Captain Hoalton began her career as a Fire Fighter I and quickly became known as a natural educator. She has spent more than 20 years shaping generations of EMS providers, earning respect for her scenario-based training, emphasis on critical thinking, and personalized instruction. Many current responders credit their core knowledge and confidence to her mentorship.
“Through years of leadership, she has built a culture of EMS training excellence—guiding and preparing hundreds of responders to deliver high-quality care in one of California’s most challenging regions,” said Sean Wilson, Training Chief for the Humboldt–Del Norte Unit.
Beyond local instruction, Captain Hoalton serves on the county-wide Medical Advisory Committee, mentors community college EMT students, supports fire academy cadets, and provides EMS training for the California Conservation Corps. She also contributes at the state level on CAL FIRE’s Emergency Medical Services Committee, reviewing policies and ensuring rural providers’ needs are represented.
Captain Hoalton remains active in operational assignments and serves as a Training Specialist with California Incident Management Team 4. She also volunteers with Camp Cinder, a program empowering young women interested in firefighting careers.
Her recognition as California EMS Educator of the Year honors her decades of service, commitment to EMS education, and lasting impact on emergency responders and the communities they serve.
