Party
on the waterfront
by JUDY HODGSON
One of the guiding principles
of this newspaper -- besides good regional journalism -- is community
service. In a staff meeting a few weeks back I was surprised
to learn that some of our newer staff members were not aware
of just how we go about delivering on that promise.
First, every week we produce
the most comprehensive community calendar on the North Coast,
which is distributed free throughout the county and available
on-line. Second, we support all nonprofits in this region by
making available our lowest ad rates and volunteering staff time
to create ads. Third, there are a few organizations, such as
Planned Parenthood and KHSU, we support with in-kind services.
Although we have produced many
timely special editorial sections over the years -- to coincide
with the Jazz and Blues festivals, the Kinetic Race, or a significant
anniversary (Dell'Arte, KEET-TV) -- we have never been a media
partner for a major event. Until this week.
The Journal is happy
to be a sponsor of the Humboldt State University Alumni Association's
first-ever Paddlefest in conjunction with HSU Homecoming this
Saturday and Sunday on the Eureka waterfront. There will be water-sport
clinics, classes and booths starting at 9 a.m. both days, with
races at noon Saturday. Don't miss the after-race party (BBQ
and music) from 3-5 p.m. Saturday and the grand finale water
parade at 11:30 a.m. Sunday (BYOB -- bring your own boat).
We would especially like to
invite Journal readers to stop by our booth (the tall
pointy white one) and meet some of our staff. Our editorial writers
and columnists have volunteered to take a shift, so you can deliver
your kudos and complaints in person.
I hope to see you there!
