It Ain’t Easy

Last week’s article on HSU’s “Studies in Race” prompts me to reiterate that the pursuit of diversity, in itself, is a false goal. The proper goal is excellence, and if excellence is pursued, without discrimination, then diversity will be achieved and all will be well served. If diversity is pursued only for itself, then mediocrity will be achieved and no one will be well served.

Having said that, it is also true that affirmative action is sometimes called for because the status quo needs to be upset and a new path established. Reconciling these two conflicting goals is probably a good illustration of there being no easy choices.
