What Matters More

It is good between our comings and goings to slow down

and notice

the way the alligator lizard

lies upon the granite slab just there,

the way his tongue flicks

and his dark, knowing eye looks

not quite at you

but not quite away,

as if to say,

the watching we two do matters more

than anything we could imagine.
