Re: “Search & Suspend

Bob, please explain the dichotomy you assert: "People’s rights vs what is RIGHT." I'm interested to see how you would expand this. Do you believe in our constitution? Do you believe in any legal rights for citizens of this country? Do you believe in property rights?
It sounds like you do not. According to you, each of us should decide what is RIGHT and ignore the constitution.. We should act on what we believe is RIGHT, regardless of the law. I think I'll start living by "Bob's rule" now. Bob, let's start with your home and possessions. You drive a gas guzzler? That is wrong. So to make it RIGHT, we'll just drive the guzzler over a cliff. There. One more problem solved, Bob style.

Re: “Search & Suspend

There is no such sign in the AHS parking lot. This is a clear case of a school staff person acting in a completely illegal way.
A message on a sweatshirt is not probable cause to search private property. Lodgepole's comments on other blogs show he is an advocate of unlimited private property rights. Now he condones unwarranted searches. Right. Well, it wasn't HIS property, so it's OK. Just some kid wearing a sweatshirt with a funny, pot-related message. OMG!!! Call in the thought police. Maybe he should have been beaten in addition to expelled from school. Expelled not for actions. Not for actually smoking or dealing pot. Not for ANYTHING illegal. Expelled because some ignorant school employee felt he was entitled to be a dictator with no responsibility to be law abiding.
In this case, I suggest Zero tolerance for zero intelligence. Make the over zealous bureaucrat personally pay for his mistake. Why let the jerk run back to Illinois to evade consequences of his actions.

Re: “Search & Suspend

Let us not ignore who will have to pay for this fiasco - us. Our tax money will pay to defend the school for this blatant misuse of authority. Their mistake - our misfortune. Here's an idea - let the costs for the lawsuit be subtracted from money the school is due to get from the bond we just passed. Explain to the students and their parents that, sorry, Arcata High School won't get the upgraded facilities they were promised. Instead, funds will go to defend the stupidity of school staff. I know this won't happen, but I want to see some accountability on their part.
If a teenage student is expected to exercise good judgment when dressing for school, and is denied basic constitutional rights if he should dress wrong, then well-paid school employees must also demonstrate good judgment. If they make a mistake, they should take the blame and have to pay for it. Not us. Arcata High School owes a public apology to the Espinosas and the community for their stupid, expensive actions.

Re: “Smiles Screwed On

"Go, Humboldt Baykeeper, go! Thank you for your never-ending vigilence and your refusal to allow half-baked development ideas from stiff-arming the rest of us. " Show up or shut up, Baykeeper has no power to "refuse to allow development ideas". Baykeeper has done a few good things, Baykeeper has done some pretty stupid things. But it holds no sway over development ideas.

Re: “Uppity, Too

Seriously, you forgot the best use for the NCJ. Takes two to start a good fire in the morning. Don't look for improvements until the publishers finally accept that the quality of their paper has declined drastically under the editorship of the the middling Hank Simms. Ignorant, petty little snot is what comes to mind every time I encounter one of Hank's "Aren't-I-OH-SO-clever" snide remarks.

Re: “Hallmark Presents

It's a damn shame that the majority can vote in whoever they choose. Its a damn shame that RedwoodLarry, Salzman and the rest did not get their way. It's a damn shame not everyone can foresee the future like Larry can. It's a damn shame Larry can't control Pat. It's a damn shame no one gives a damn about Larry's petty grudges.

Re: “Free Ride

What constitutes the "common good". What makes Jud Ellinwood think he has the right to unilaterally determine what is best for Eureka or for the county? It is arrogant and very egotistical for him, or any individual, including Richard Salzman, to make pronouncements about the common good. Only egotistical control freaks would disparage another person because they ran for an office without being anointed by them and the other self-appointed dictators.
It takes a twisted mind to equate neutrality with the "the triumph of an individual’s ego and self interest over the common good". By definition, to be neutral is to not influence. To be neutral is to remove your ego from the situation. Ellinwood and Salzman are pouting because things did not go their way. If their egos were not so big, they might take away the lesson that they do not run the show. Voters in Humboldt county decided for themselves what is "good".
Ellinwood will never "get it'. Salzman will never understand that his presence in any political race is detrimental. The political scene has deteriorated since his arrival to Humboldt. We would all be better off if he would go back to Los Angeles.
