Seth has perpetuated the myth of "large margins" against prop 19 in Humboldt in November of 2010. The statewide vote was 53.5% No and 46.5% Yes. In Humboldt that "large" margin was only one tenth of a point. 53.6% No and 46.4% Yes. (Data from the California Secretary of State website http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/sov/2010-g… ) In the big picture how Humboldt voted didn't matter--it could have voted 100% yes and not changed the outcome. That's why for any legalization initiative to succeed the proponents are going to have to convince traditionally conservative voter areas like southern California and the Central Valley that legalization is in their best interests.

One of the ways we can shift the conversation about the legalization of cannabis is to recognize that the use of the noun "Prohibition" is now confusing in the media without a qualifier. Alcohol Prohibition in the United States only lasted 13 years before it was repealed in 1933. Marijuana Prohibition on the Federal level is now 76 years old and clock is still ticking. More importantly, the black hole Marijuana Prohibition created is still sucking up taxpayer's dollars and people's lives. It's probably the most failed public policy in the history of this country. Even slavery didn't last this long before the States began to abolish it.

Did anyone really think that Reckitt Benckiser would want to give up any of their 10 Billion dollars in profits without a fight? BTW, the wood rats which pot growers fear at this time of the year when young plants are starting, are herbivores and are not looking for water, but they do love some tender leafy greens. Traps, not poisons are super effective and no one dies except the unfortunate rat who lives next to the garden. Toss the dead wood rat out into the bush because Nature wastes nothing and it will feed predators and scavengers.
