When was the last significant tsunami in Humboldt? Does anyone know? It seems like our bay has a very different and favorable configuration than Crescent City.
Leo was lion. He knew what was going on in this county and was willing to speak up when things were both right and wrong. Agree with him or not you left his presence more aware of what you were doing and how it affected our community. Leo cared deeply about this county and put his money and his mouth where he thought it would do the most. Even though I would always get an earful of criticism and a drop of praise I knew it was well deserved. Rest in Peace my friend.
This is a great approach. Maybe not a permanent solution but finally the inertia of stagnation has been broken. Kudos to all who worked on this!
This will be one of the keys to dealing with some of our main contributors to crime, homelessness, families coming apart etc. In patient services are far more successful than outpatient services in solving substance abuse and ultimately more cost effective. These programs just have not been available to many that really need them.
The ability to offer in patient programs will help all of us not just those with substance abuse issues. Our government is not going to solve all our problems but with this is one we could sure use some help.
Did Nicholas just say the reason Ron was in prison was just to pay the salaries of the prison guards? Wow!
Ron was extremely influential in getting grants for a lot of projects many of them now need a lot of fixing. The worst of them are built on incredibly faulty "Lavalley science".
Regarding the plover, by his continuous threat to sue the county if we did not bend to his will is a shameful example of a rouge biologist.
Was some of his work Ok? Maybe. But now we are going to have to question all of it.
Personally I am glad he has a friend. We all need them. He just cannot be trusted for a lot more reasons than what he got prosecuted and convicted for.
In Mr. Lavalley's 1999 snowy plover report there is a picture of a plover nest in European beach grass. He misidentified it as a native grass suggesting that the European variety needed to be removed. That misrepresentation has cost hundreds of acres of historically productive breeding habitat that was torn up by either bulldozers or hand crews. The plover has not been helped at all and at Little River (Clam) Beach only one year out of the last ten has there been any chicks even hatched.
His senseless promotion of habitat destruction has cost us millions and has cost migrating birds and native species precious sanctuaries. Although he did not act alone.
I can't say if he intentionally misidentified the grass that was helping plovers but he certainly should have corrected that misrepresentation long ago. What is most disturbing is his total lack of remorse.
What is painfully ironic is the birds he and we all love are worse off because of his deception.
Re: “Arkley's 'Dog Ranch' Peninsula Property Sold to Conservation Coalition”
Somewhat Murky. Sounds about right. $2,000,000 of public money was granted to put this land into Public hands. Instead a Private entity now has permenantt title to it.
Oddly(?) enough the Executive Director of the Harbor District Larry Oetker and Mike Van Hattem were director's of the Fiends of the Dunes. Toss in the fact that the Harbor District Attorney listed in all the closed session agenda negotiations just happens to be a partner in the firm that regularly represents Arkley's Security National.
Murky doesn't even begin to describe this deal.
I totally get why Arkley wanted to sell but the grant money was earmarked to deliver it into Public hands.
Friends of the Dunes has a very problematic history of abandoning the project at MCSD, preventing an Eagle Scout project involving planting trees, attempting to illegally close historic trails, conformance problems with their so called "Restoration" projects, numerous neighbor complaints etc... etc...
As long as they keep getting the press such as the NCJ to keep printing these fluff pieces it keeps going on.
