The California Native Plant Society (CNPS) invites the public to "Tropical
Fungi: New Insights from the Guiana Shield and Congo Basin," on Wednesday,
September 9, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. at Six Rivers Masonic Lodge, 251 Bayside Road,
near 7th and Union in Arcata.
Dr. Terry Henkel, mycologist at Humboldt State University, will describe his
work in Guyana and Congo exploring the some of the world's largest intact
tropical forests, documenting new species of fungi, and studying their
relationships with green plants. Besides sharing the majesty and beauty of these
places, he will also encourage an appreciation of what lies beneath the forest floor
Dr. Henkel's work has surprised ecologists by finding that fungal diversity in
the tropics approaches that of species-rich temperate forests. His discovery of
forests dominated by legume and dipterocarp trees has stimulated research into
their ecology and mycorrhizal relationships.
Doors open at 7:00 p.m. for refreshments, socializing, and sales. The North
Coast Chapter of CNPS offers free public programs on the second Wednesday of
each month, September through May. 822-2015, www.northcoastcnps.org.
