Dell’Arte’s graduating Class of 2012 presents their ‘FINALS’ Audience asked to grade work that will investigate dramatic acrobatics, mask, melodrama and clown. They accosted you in Commedia. You wept with them in Melodrama. You laughed at them in Clown. Now, after a year in one of the most challenging acting programs in the world, the students of the Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre’s Class of 2013 will present THE FINALS.
These international students of Dell’Arte’s Professional Training Program and first-year MFA Program will devise and perform an evening of 10-minute plays … their finals. These performances are a culmination of rigorous physical and vocal training, research in mask and traditional theatre styles, as well as extensive improvisational exploration. The end result of these studies is the development of vital dramatic instincts and the ability to articulate a fierce theatrical imagination.
The process of creating the THE FINALS requires that the students devise work in small ensembles, offering these theatre-makers the consummate opportunity to explore their own passion for performance, no matter if it is simply to “make people laugh” or to “provoke social change.” Their aim is to move an audience into the realm of the imagined – to inspire, to entertain, to transform.
At THE FINALS, the audience will be cast as the ultimate instructor. Receiving a “report card” with their ticket, audience members will be asked to reflect, in grades and comments, their response to the students’ work. But, it is in the audience’s enthusiasm, or lack thereof, from which the students receive their most authentic and telling grade. Come, and be glad you did.
Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre is a professional training program offering a one-year certificate program and the only accredited MFA in Ensemble-Based Physical Theatre in the world. Dell’Arte is internationally recognized for its non-urban point of view, its history of ensemble practice, its actor training programs, and its work in pioneering “theatre of place.” One of its deepest values is engendering the relationship between art and place, between artist and community.
THE FINALS run Thursday through Saturday, May 23-25 in the Carlo Theatre in Blue Lake at 8 p.m. All performances are pay-what-you-can. Reservations highly encouraged. For tickets, call the box office at (707) 668-5663 Ext. 20. For more information, visit www.dellarte.com
