Re: “Almost 50 Guns Surrendered in Eureka Buy Back

So... by law all gun sales must be through a registered dealer, and buyers must submit to a background check and go through a ten-day waiting period.

Am I right in understanding that the EPD just made fifty felonious gun purchases? And if not, what other exemptions to the law are there?

Just curious.

Re: “H1N1 Claims Local Man

What the hell? According to the CDC, this year's flu viruses have mutated and are not affected by the vaccine. They optimistically predict a 12% to23% reduction in the risk of catching the flu after being inoculated while stating that 49% of those with the flu already had their shots. Methinks the old timey precautions of washing your hands often, avoiding crowded indoor areas and covering your mouth when you sneeze might be used to better effect, without introducing unnecessary crap into your system.

Re: “Catch and Release

So Andy Mills thinks that making possession of 'roofies' a misdemeanor instead of a felony is going to give some people " excuse to rape women." Are you kidding me? A man looking to rape a woman (a serious felony) is not going to give a shit whether possession of the drug he uses to enable the act is a felony or a misdemeanor. That's as dumb as saying outlawing guns will stop shootings - if a person is going to shoot someone (a crime punishable by death), they surely don't care whether the weapon they use is legal or not.

Re: “Flash Fiction 2014

I was left feeling like I could have picked 99 words out of just about anything and won. Cute, but meaningless. How about something under 500 words? Or 1000? Flash fiction should be short, but still develop the elements of a story, not just a cutesy little snippet.

Re: “Batten Down the Hatches

So...we get a wee bit of moisture and a puff of wind or two and everyone runs to 'batten down the hatches'. Well, gather 'round, ye kiddies and let me tell you about a time when, if it hadn't started raining by Halloween, it started that night and didn't let up until April, for that used to be a normal winter around here. Get your flashlights ready and don't go foolishly driving around the lowlands, but Honeybunch, this ain't no storm.

Re: “Korbel Mill For Sale

Enough people have realized that Thompson's Water Seal and redwood stain on second-growth sap-wood does not a Redwood deck make. They tried to convert cut-over redwood land to Doug fir but got forced to replant redwood starting back in the late seventies. Now they're logging those hybridized 'wonder trees' and finding out that you can put any spin you want on it but second-growth redwood is shit wood, barely fit for utility fencing.

His comments on Doug fir confuse me. First he says that he believes the mill would be better run by a company with "deep knowledge of Douglas- fir manufacturing and marketing for the California market," then he says they will continue to focus on their core business, "growing and harvesting high quality... Douglas-fir timber."

Oh. I get it. They want to grow it here, clear cut it then ship the logs somewhere else to be 'manufactured and marketed'. Way to rape the county and out-source the jobs, boys. Does anybody here know how to say fucked?

Re: “Judge Denies Bid To Stop Trinity Water Releases

Does anyone else see the connection between these huge gravel bars and low/warm flows? I think the best thing that could be done for the Klamath, Trinity, Mad, Van Duzen and Eel Rivers would be to invite every gravel mining company in the western United States to come out here and scour these clogged up river beds clean.

Get the gravel out and even during low flow years the water will be in deep rocky channels like it should be, flowing quick and cool instead of filtering slowly through hot rock.

Why is gravel removal seen as such an environmental catastrophe instead of the boon for fish it would be?
